The 2026 Ballon d’Or is months away, but you can make a surging run in the prediction markets right now.

The FIFA World Cup is playing havoc with the Ballon d’Or odds on Kalshi as goals fly in and traders take advantage.

A brace in the soft early group games may not have an ultimate effect on the final Ballon d’Or vote. But that’s not stopping traders from feeding off the buzz and raising the share price game by game.

We look at some of the frontrunners on the prediction markets who are carrying their strong domestic season into the World Cup. Could it finally be Harry Kane’s year, or will it be a first Golden Ball for Kylian Mbappé?

At a glancing header:

  • Harry Kane is enjoying a World Cup surge: England’s talisman has surged in the prediction markets following a stellar domestic season and an impressive World Cup start.
  • Look for likely World Cup winners: France are the overwhelming World Cup favorites, so watch ‘Les Bleus’ picks like Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise.
  • The Messi-Ronaldo duopoly is long-gone: that means more value chances on the Ballon d’Or odds markets. Could young Lamine Yamal surprise, despite Barcelona’s poor Champions League showing this season?

Who Will Win the 2026 Ballon d’Or? The Latest Odds

2026 Ballon d’Or Odds: The Frontrunners

England Harry Kane | ‘Yes’ @ 37ȼ | Probability: 38%

England’s Harry Kane has had an incredible season at Bayern Munich, scoring 66 goals across all competitions as the team eased to another Bundesliga title.

Yes, the Bundesliga doesn’t have the most watertight defences in the world. And yes, Bayern Munich stuttered in this year’s Champions League, exiting at the semi-final stage.

But the 32-year-old seems to age like a fine wine. His all-round game is better, and he fights in all areas of the pitch. That versatility will play well with Ballon d’Or voters.

Kane scored two goals in England’s opening World Cup game against Croatia, after which his Kalshi price to win the Golden Ball leapt from 25ȼ to 38ȼ. He's also a decent 19% shot on the Golden Boot markets.

Regardless of whether England do lift the World Cup or not, that means you could have sold your shares there and then for an easy profit.

Expect more swings for Kane and others during this tournament.

France Michael Olise | ‘Yes’ @ 10ȼ | Probability: 13%

Not to be outdone by Harry Kane, club teammate Michael Olise scored 26 goals and provided 33 assists as he helped Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga.

Again, the standard of defences between the Bundesliga and the Premier League (where Olise starred for Crystal Palace) will be called into question. Plus, a Bundesliga player has not won the Ballon d’Or since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.

But Olise is in the French national team, the deserved favorites on the 2026 World Cup prediction markets to win the tournament. That gives him a massive benefit if you’re looking for World Cup spikes, and an Ousmane Dembelé alternative.

France Kylian Mbappé | ‘Yes’ @ 10ȼ | Probability: 11%

Kylian Mbappé just edges the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner, Ousmane Dembélé, as our third pick from the favorites.

Yes, Mbappé’s Real Madrid had a poor season, finishing La Liga eight points behind Barcelona and exiting the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Mbappé did end the season as La Liga’s top scorer, however.

It’s weird to call Mbappé a “value pick”, but at 10ȼ, that’s exactly what France’s superstar is.

Incredibly, he has never won the Ballon d’Or, although he did place third in 2023’s vote. Why not now? He already has two goals at the World Cup, with more sure to come.

Don’t dismiss another factor when navigating the 2026 Ballon d’Or odds: midfielders have won the award more than strikers in the past 10 years.

Sticking with a Champions League-winning attacking midfielder: go for Ousmane Dembélé. Thinking of backing for one of France’s all-time greatest forwards: Mbappé is your man.

Analysis: How to Maximize Returns on the 2026 Ballon d’Or Winner Market

Here are some top tips for picking out the Golden Ball winners from the back of the net.

Look for previous winner patterns

In general, but not exclusively, a European league championship and a Champions League win can help cement your place as a Ballon d’Or odds frontrunner.

Dembelé did it in 2025 following PSG’s Champions League triumph, as did Manchester City’s Rodri a year earlier. That was helped in no small part by Rodri’s key role in helping Spain to another Euros win in the summer of 2024.

Lionel Messi won in 2022, but that was largely based on Argentina winning the World Cup in Qatar the previous winter.

Trade off the World Cup buzz

The 2026 Ballon d’Or isn’t awarded until October. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t buy shares now in a big hope and sell over the summer for a profit.

That’s particularly true if a frontrunner is enjoying a great FIFA World Cup. Harry Kane was a 25% shot an hour before he took to the pitch in England’s 4-2 win versus Croatia. After scoring a brace, Kane’s price jumped to 38%.

True, other stars have scored well this World Cup, including Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. But the French talisman had a tough season with injuries in a flagging Real Madrid side.

Regardless of whether England go far, you can trade on the Kane optimism now. Better still, wait until England’s next group games against Ghana and Panama, when Kane is likely to have more field days.

It’s all about the season, not the calendar year

The Ballon d’Or criteria was changed in 2022 so that players are now assessed based on their most recent season, not the past calendar year. That puts players like Harry Kane in pole position.

Kane has had a superb season, carried over into a promising World Cup start. It means you can track the summer tournament and eye up teams with international superstars who have also had good domestic seasons. We’re looking at you, Dembelé.

The Messi-Ronaldo duopoly is over: hunt the value

In the not-so-distant past, picking a Ballon d’Or winner was easy: deposit your money and back Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

That duopoly is gone, with Karin Benzema (2022), Rodri (2024), and Ousmane Dembelé (2025) taking up the slack in recent years.

However, those players showed that talented attacking midfielders have generally been the play.

Look for stars who have helped a team to not only win their domestic league, but also a major European trophy. As with Rodri in 2024, winning for your country doesn’t hurt.
