Jack Hughes is a one-man shooting gallery for the New Jersey Devils (58%), leading the team in shot attempts, shots on target, scoring chances, and expected goals.
My Rangers vs. Devils predictions expect another significant shooting performance from Hughes, who always seems to bring his best against New Jersey's biggest rivals.
Let's dive into my NHL picks for Thursday, Oct. 15.
Rangers vs Devils prediction: Devils moneyline
I like the New Jersey Devils to take this one and would back them to 60%.
Even when adjusting for score effects, the Devils sit fourth in expected goal share at 5-on-5. They trail only the Mammoth, Avalanche, and Hurricanes. Those are pretty good teams!
The New York Rangers own a solid but more modest 14th-place ranking, and they've actually been out-shot at 5-on-5.
Dylan Garand looks good, but the season-ending injury to Igor Shesterkin will make New Jersey’s life easier in terms of converting their edge in shots and chances into results, which has been a problem for them over the years.

Rangers vs Devils combo
I’m on the Devils to win this game and expect their star duo of Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt to lead the way.
Hughes has registered 39 shots on target over his last six games versus New York while recording 14 points along the way. He lives for games against the Devils’ chief rivals, and Shesterkin’s absence will only give him more incentive to shoot.
Bratt has logged seven points through six games this season and rides shotgun with Hughes at 5-on-5 and on the man advantage. There is great correlation between the two, and that’s what we want when building combos.
Rangers vs Devils combo
- New Jersey Devils moneyline
- Jack Hughes Over 3.5 shots
- Jesper Bratt Over 0.5 points
TOP PICK
Rangers vs Devils player prop: Jack Hughes Over 3.5 shots
Hughes has spent at least 100 minutes of 5-on-5 play with seven different forwards since the beginning of last season. He produced shot attempts and shots on target at a more efficient clip with Arseny Gritsyuk on his wing than anyone else.
Sheldon Keefe put Gritsyuk on Hughes’ wing last time out, and he responded with eight shots on target and three points. He’s in a good spot to build on those outputs against the Rangers, who rank 25th in 5-on-5 shot share this season.
Hughes is also averaging 6.5 shots on goal over his past six regular-season home games against New York.
Rangers vs Devils goal scorer: Timo Meier
It's time for Timo Meier to find the net.
He's tied with Hughes and Auston Matthews for ninth in shots on goal, but Meier is still yet to score. Meier also leads the league in shots without a goal, and he's one of only two forwards with 20-plus shots who hasn't scored.
Meier has scored in four of his past six games against New York. Like everybody, he gets a better chance of finding the net without needing to beat an all-world netminder in Shesterkin.
