Expert NHL moneyline picks: Nov. 5
Golden Knights vs Red Wings pick:
Golden Knights
The Golden Knights just have too much firepower for me to even think about taking the Red Wings. Their top six is elite; Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and Mitch Marner have combined for 59 points this season, and Marner enters tonight riding an 11-game point streak.
Fourth in expected goals, Vegas should have no problem against a penalty kill ranked 25th in hockey.
Blues vs Devils pick:
Devils
The New Jersey Devils are incredible at home, rocking a 7-2-2 record this season, and are in the midst of playing their best hockey. After wins over the Golden Knights and Oilers, the Devils should have no trouble with the St. Louis Blues.
Bruins vs. Penguins pick:
Bruins
It's never a bad time to ride one of the best netminders in hockey, and that's exactly what we're doing with Jeremy Swayman against a Penguins team that's struggled to find the back of the net.
Pittsburgh's underwhelming power play, ranked 23rd in the NHL, only strengthens our case.
Flyers vs. Rangers pick:
Rangers
The Philadelphia Flyers have been an absolute disaster offensively, ranking dead last in the NHL with just 2.18 goals per game, and I don't see things getting any easier at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers have been excellent on home ice, too, winning seven games while allowing just 2.33 goals per contest.
New York also owns the league's best penalty kill at 90.4%, which should neutralize a Philadelphia power play converting at an ugly 16.7% clip. This has an easy Rangers dub written all over it.
Mammoth vs. Canadiens pick:
Canadiens
Expect a massive bounce-back performance from a Montreal Canadiens team that just coughed up a four-goal lead with less than three minutes to play a couple of days ago.
This might be the scariest Montreal team we see all year — terrible spot for the Utah Mammoth to be in.
Hurricanes vs. Islanders pick:
Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes are the most sound hockey team in the league from top to bottom.
Statistically, they have the best goaltender in hockey, with Pyotr Kotchetkov's 1.84 goals-against average and +9.0 goals saved above expected Top 3 in the NHL. His offense ranks third in goals per game, first in shots, and has the 12th-best power play. Not bad.
Stars vs. Blue Jackets pick:
Stars
The Dallas Stars are excellent on the road, sporting a 4-1-1 record away from home, and there's plenty to like about this matchup.
Dallas owns one of the NHL's best penalty kills at 90%, while the Columbus Blue Jackets are operating at an ugly 72.5% on the penalty kill. That special teams mismatch will be the difference.
Canucks vs. Jets pick:
Jets
The Winnipeg Jets were at a low point in their season before making history with their four-goal comeback in under three minutes against Montreal. Expect them to ride that momentum against one of the worst teams in hockey.
Blackhawks vs. Lightning pick:
Lightning
This one is trading at 80% in favor of the Lightning for a reason. The Blackhawks are simply bad and are coming into the second night of a back-to-back after getting beaten up by the Panthers last night. Expect a well-rested, elite Lightning team to handle business.
Predators vs. Avalanche pick:
Avalanche
The Avalanche are one of the best home teams in hockey, sporting a 6-1-1 record at Ball Arena. It helps that they simply can't stop scoring, potting 4.13 goals per game — good for first in hockey. Look for the boys to handle a strong Predators team at home.
Oilers vs. Ducks pick:
Oilers
The Anaheim Ducks can certainly fill the net, but their lack of defensive structure leaves them vulnerable in their own zone. That's a recipe for disaster against Connor McDavid and an Edmonton Oilers team tied for the league lead in goals per game.
With Anaheim ranking 23rd in expected goals against, I expect the Oilers to come out on top in a high-scoring affair.
Today's NHL moneyline combo
Between the Devils' star power, the Stars' defensive structure and special teams advantage, and the Canadiens looking to bounce back after a catastrophic collapse, all three teams have a strong case to come out on top tonight. At 5.28x, it's an easy investment for me.
