Flyers vs Hurricanes Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Kochetkov Should Have Easy Night in Net

Carolina welcomes the Flyers to town tonight and will look to continue its climb up the standings after a mediocre start. The Canes are great at limiting shots, and our NHL picks believe this game will stay Under the total.

The Carolina Hurricanes will look to stay hot when they welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to PNC Arena for their second meeting of the season tonight. Carolina has won six of its last eight games and is pegged as the home favorite according to NHL odds.

The Canes have softened up a bit defensively this season, allowing 3.27 goals per game (17th), but did pick up an impressive 4-0 shutout against the Lightning last time out, and Pyotr Kochetkov is slated to get his second straight start in net.

Will Kochetkov and the Hurricanes put up another strong defensive showing against the Flyers? I’ll discuss in my Flyers vs. Hurricanes NHL picks for Wednesday, November 15.

Flyers vs Hurricanes predictions

Pyotr Kochetkov had by far his best game of the season on Saturday, stopping all 22 shots he faced to help the Carolina Hurricanes skate to a 4-0 win against the Lightning. Kochetkov had gotten off to a terrible start to the year with three straight losses with an abysmal .838 SV% and 4.33 GAA in those contests.

The 24-year-old was solid last season, though, recording a .909 SV% and 2.44 GAA across 23 games while posting a 12-7-5 record. Coincidentally, one of his wins was a 19-save shutout against his opponent tonight — the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Hurricanes haven’t been up to their usual standard on the defensive side of the puck this season, ranking 17th in goals against per game (3.27), but you could argue that it’s been down to poor goaltending more than anything. Carolina is giving up an NHL-best 26 shots on net per game, yet the team SV% is just .874, which ranks 30th.

The Flyers have scored 10 goals over their past two games but I’d argue that’s more a flash in the pan than anything and I expect them to come back down to earth against a tight Canes defense. Before those contests, Philadelphia averaged just 2.00 goals per game across its previous five outings — getting shut out twice — and is scoring a middling 3.20 gpg on the year (19th).

Low-scoring games have generally been a trend for both clubs this season so with a strong Hurricanes defense and in-form Kochetkov, I expect that to continue. The Under has cashed in four of Philadelphia’s last five games and seven of Carolina’s last nine, so I’ll be taking the Under 6.0 as my best bet tonight.

Flyers vs Hurricanes same-game parlay

Under 6.5

Teuvo Teravainen anytime goalscorer

Hurricanes moneyline

Along with the Under, I’ll hone in on the Hurricanes in tonight’s same-game parlay as I look for Teuvo Teravainen to pick up another goal and for the hosts to earn the win.

Teravainen leads Carolina with nine tallies this season thanks in part to a sky-high 25.7% shooting percentage. While that number likely isn’t sustainable long term, the winger has been able to consistently generate good looks, ranking Top 3 on the team in shots and scoring chances per 60 minutes. Teravainen scored last time out vs. Tampa Bay and also against Philadelphia in their prior meeting.

The Hurricanes are the huge favorite tonight and while they may not run away with the game, they should be able to get the job done. Carolina has won eight straight meetings vs. Philadelphia, though five were decided by one goal.

Flyers vs Hurricanes moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Canes opened as the big favorite on home ice, coming into this one at -262 on the moneyline, with the total set at 6.0 goals. You could certainly make an argument for taking the Flyers for the +223 payout, but I think Carolina has too much of an edge to ignore.

Philadelphia has been decent on paper this season — going 7-7-1 over 15 games — but a deeper look into its schedule causes some concern. The Flyers have defeated only three teams that currently hold a playoff spot (Canucks, Ducks, Kings), while dropping games to basement teams like the Sharks and Senators.

Carolina started the season off slow, going 3-4-0 over its first seven games, but has responded with a 6-2-0 run since October 26. The Hurricanes have allowed just 2.00 gpg during this eight-game stretch — tied for second best in the NHL — while posting two shutouts over that span.

The Under will also be the play tonight as both teams have been fond of low-scoring games this season. Carolina has totaled five goals or fewer in seven of its last nine contests while Philly has seen six goals or fewer in nine of its 15 games this year.

Kochetkov hasn’t been amazing in the Carolina cage, though he showed flashes of his former self in a shutout of the Lightning. A stingy Hurricanes defense that’s allowing just 25.4 shots per game during this eight-game run should help Kochetkov keep the score low against the Flyers.
