There have been six or more total goals scored in six of the Washington Capitals’ past eight games, a trend driven primarily by their strong offensive play. This season, the Capitals rank in the top half of the league in goals scored per game, shots on goal per game, and shooting percentage.
Washington’s underlying metrics also suggest that this success will continue. Entering this matchup, the Capitals rank fourth in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60).
The Chicago Blackhawks’ offense enters this contest in good form as well, averaging 3.71 goals per game over their past seven outings. The good news for this hot offense is that it could get even stronger Friday, as superstar forward Connor Bedard nears his return from injury.
Coach Jeff Blashill suggested Bedard will be back this weekend, though whether that comes Friday or Saturday remains to be seen. Regardless, the offense has been productive without him over the past week, and his return would only strengthen the forward group.
Finally, neither defense has been reliable this season, as both teams rank 20th or lower in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60).
