The 49ers and Raiders meet on Saturday in the only preseason game at the Allegiant Stadium this summer, kicking off at 4pm ET and available to watch on NFL Network.

Neither team has a win to their name in preseason so far but with positive news around starting quarterbacks playing, we should see Geno Smith and Brock Purdy facing off.

Without wanting to sound like a broken record, news around quarterbacks is key for preseason betting. It’s hard to know if starters will be getting reps, or how many series each backup will play.

With that in mind we have to look at the available information we have from Kyle Shanahan and Pete Carroll around their respective starting units.

For the Las Vegas Raiders we’re expecting to see Geno Smith back in action and the team needs him. Pete Carroll has said that “everybody’s live” when asked around starters in this game, while Smith himself has said that he wants “to set the tone” on Saturday.

He started their tie against the Seahawks but was withdrawn after just three passing attempts which left the keys to the offense in the hands on Aidan O’Connell and Cam Miller. O’Connell got the bulk of the snaps, but much like his performances in the regular season, he was inconsistent. Yes, he had 200 yards and a TD but he also had two interceptions.

For Shanahan things are a little clearer. The San Francisco 49ers are already suffering from an injury crisis which will force some players to perhaps play more than they otherwise would. Brock Purdy was held out of the preseason opener and the 49ers looked terrible.

The Niners’ QB corps that day was comprised of Mac Jones, Tanner Mordecai and Carter Bradley and they all failed to throw a touchdown pass, while all managing to throw an interception.

We know that Purdy isn’t going to play a full game, or even a half, but in leading out this team we might be able to see him set the tone, for the backups to follow.

Elsewhere we will see more starters play on both sides of the ball. In the defeat to the Broncos it was purely Ben Bartch who got on the field and we can expect to see a lot more first-stringers set foot on the grass this week. One of the stars of camp, Ricky Pearsall is set to make his preseason bow and the team will be hoping that he can continue the performances that we’ve seen so far.

These are two head coaches that respect preseason football, with neither Shanahan or Carroll having a losing record. The key here is that Shanahan has a 5-2 record in the second week of preseason and has historically played his strongest sides in these contests.

Don’t worry about the injuries, the 49ers should have enough to stay within 4.0 points of the Raiders.
