Two border rivals shoot for a 3-0 start when West Virginia meets Virginia in the Duke's Mayo Classic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
My West Virginia vs. Virginia prediction and college football picks are backing the favored Cavaliers (-10.5) to not only win but do so in convincing fashion against a porous Mountaineers secondary.
Read on for my breakdown of the game in Charlotte.
TOP PICK
Who will win West Virginia vs Virginia: Virginia -10.5
It's hard to win games if your secondary is giving up big plays, which is why I'm backing Virginia to cover the spread against a leaky West Virginia defensive unit.
Despite playing a fairly easy schedule, the Mountaineers have already allowed 22 pass plays of 10+ yards, tied for 121st nationally. Eight of those have gone for 20+ yards, a big reason they rank in the 15th percentile in explosive pass rate allowed.
The Cavs rank in the 95th percentile in that area, with Beau Pribula hitting on five of his six throws of 20+ yards downfield.
Add in Virginia's filthy defense, and I'm laying the 10.5 points out to 53% probability.

West Virginia vs Virginia Over/Under pick: Under 53.5
I expect Virginia to put up plenty of points — but I struggle to see West Virginia holding up its side of this total.
Virginia's defensive performance against NC State was eye-opening, in particular the way the Cavs held a talented Wolfpack offense to -0.16 EPA/run and surrendered just one explosive play on the night.
West Virginia's offense isn't dominant in any particular area, and Mike Hawkins Jr. isn't the player that CJ Bailey is. He's also already notched a 4.2% turnover-worthy passing rate against far weaker defenses than he'll face here.
I expect Virginia to limit West Virginia's ability to run the ball, and use its own three-headed rushing attack to control the clock as this game ticks just under the total, playable to 52%.
West Virginia vs Virginia combo
Virginia should control this game, and the script will see the Cavaliers making it difficult for the Mountaineers on both sides of the ball.
The Cavaliers rank 14th in early-down EPA/play defensively, and West Virginia's 0.14 early down EPA simply won't lead to many sustained drives.
