Weather like this kills passing games, which makes UNLV’s ground attack a smash play against a Hawaii offense that can’t throw in ideal conditions, let alone a deluge.

Two Mountain West teams looking to rebound after an 0-1 start collide on the island as Hawaii (44%) hosts UNLV (56%) at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Week 1.

The market is giving Hawaii respect given its recent success in home games under coach Timmy Chang, but has the love gone too far?

 TOP PICK
UNLV vs Hawaii prediction: UNLV -2.5

With one week of data, there's more reason to buy into UNLV than there is Hawaii.

The Rebels gained 460 yards against one of the best defenses in the Group of 6 (Memphis). Hawaii, meanwhile, was inept offensively for all but two drives against Stanford, and the defense was brutal (468 total yards allowed on 6.5 yards per play).

This might be the biggest "weather" game on the slate in Week 1 with sustained winds of 22 mph and a 23% chance of rain. UNLV's offensive philosophy is well-suited for survival given its dominance on the ground (eighth in EPA per rush last season), led by dual-threat quarterback Jackson Arnold and star running back Jai'Den Thomas

Hawaii's Run-and-Shoot offense needs wide receivers to thrive, and the injured Pofele Ashlock leaves them without answers for how to move the ball consistently

Play the Rebels up to -3.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Hawaii managed a 36% success rate against in Week 0, which looked even worse before the fourth quarter (29% in the first quarter, 24% in the second, 19% in the third, 55% in the fourth).

UNLV vs Hawaii combo

Hawaii hasn't been able to generate much of a rushing attack under Chang. After ranking 133rd in EPA per rush a season ago, the Rainbow Warriors put up just 46 rushing yards on 22 attempts against Stanford in Week 0.

On a wet and windy day, the onus is on quarterback Micah Alejado to generate the vast majority of production. That's difficult to do in a receiver-reliant system when only Tama Uiliata has emerged as a reliable target — you need multiple effective wideouts to make this system go.

As great as UNLV's rushing offense is, their passing attack is up in the air, as no wide receivers have emerged as difference-makers.

With neither offense in a position to win repeatedly in the air and the weather playing a significant role, I agree with the downward line movement on the total and still recommend the Under at the current price (55.5).

UNLV vs Hawaii combo

  • UNLV -2.5

UNLV vs Hawaii weather

The significant wind (22 mph) will impact both passing offenses, and the chance of rain likely impacts Hawai'i's Run-and-Shoot approach the most.
