Two former Pac-12 rivals clash after dark like old times, as both UCLA and California debut new head coaches on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, Calif.
Despite being on the road, UCLA is a 2.5-point favorite in Bob Chesney's first game leading the Bruins, but my UCLA vs. California prediction and college football picks are taking Tosh Lupoi's program to cover behind a strong performance from Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.

UCLA vs California prediction: California +2.5
UCLA is getting a little too much respect considering they're going on the road under a new head coach with a lineup predominantly made up of transfers, many of whom were playing at the Group of Six level last season.
California has one of the best QBs in the country in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who was sixth nationally in big-time throws last season (28), and new head coach Tosh Lupoi loaded up with proven playmakers around him in the portal.
The Golden Bears have the clear QB advantage against the Bruins, who return the talented but inconsistent Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava had UCLA just 105th in EPA per pass last year, while JKS had Cal 52nd.
Cal's QB advantage is why I would take the Golden Bears to cover +1.5 or better.
COVERS INTEL: Sagapolutele was second nationally in EPA lost to drops last season, which is why Lupoi added Ian Strong, Chase Hendricks, and Dorian Thomas (combined 2,359 receiving yards in 2025).
UCLA vs California combo
There's a lot of newness on these rosters, but both have proven QBs with the physical tools to make plenty of plays and turn this into a shootout, like the good old days of Pac-12 After Dark.
JKS has a top-five arm in college football and can pressure a Bruins defense banking on more than a half-dozen transfers to flip a unit that was 108th in EPA per pass last season.
And though Iamaleava isn't on JKS' level, he's one of the better dual-threat QBs in the country and averaged over 4.6 yards per carry after contact last year. That mobility will hurt a Cal defense that was 126th in EPA per rush in 2025.
The lack of defensive continuity against talented QBs should lead to fireworks in California.
