Stanford is staring down a freight train in South Bend, and Notre Dame’s biggest edge may show up before halftime.

The Legends Trophy rivalry hits its 40th meeting today at 3:30 p.m. ET, with Notre Dame laying 38.5 points on the spread with a 99% win probability in South Bend.

My Stanford vs. Notre Dame prediction attacks the opening half, where this historic matchup could turn into a rout in a hurry.

Who will win Stanford vs Notre Dame today? Pick: Notre Dame -38.5

It's the Notre Dame Fighting Irish -38.5, up to -40.5, or pass, because Stanford's three losses have come by an average of 40.3 points per game, and Notre Dame is the best team the Cardinal will face all season.

Furthermore, the Fighting Irish have covered all three games as five-touchdown favorites or greater under head coach Marcus Freeman, and they have a +12.8 spread differential in those contests.

Motivation is always the concern with a massive favorite, but Freeman has an easy coaching point after last week's 37-26 win at North Carolina. Notre Dame underperformed on both sides of the ball, and I'm expecting a much sharper effort today.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Notre Dame has the sixth-best scoring offense in the first half this season, averaging 25.6 PPG, and the 10th-best scoring defense, allowing just 6.8 PPG in the first half.

Stanford vs Notre Dame Over/Under pick: Over 54.5

Even though Notre Dame might do the heavy lifting, I'm riding with the Over 54.5 up to 56.5. The Over has cashed in five of Stanford's past six games dating back to last season, 55 is the most important key total in college football, and 58 and 59 are also key numbers.

Stanford has given up 45+ points twice this season, and Fighting Irish QB C.J. Carr is torching opponents. Carr is seventh nationally in passer rating and ninth in passing touchdowns.

Since Notre Dame can pick its score, I don't need a lot from the Cardinal. I'm counting on Stanford fighting to avoid getting shut out, which will be easier if it is playing the Fighting Irish's backups in the second half.

Stanford vs Notre Dame combo

Everything points toward the Fighting Irish controlling this game and forcing the Cardinal into a desperate game script. The correlation is straightforward: Notre Dame goes up big in the first half and a meaningless (hopefully) Stanford score helps push the game toward the Over.

Notre Dame taking its foot off the gas is my biggest concern, which is why getting early separation is so important. I'm essentially banking on the Fighting Irish scoring 50+ points and the Cardinal not getting shutout.

Stanford vs Notre Dame combo

  • Fighting Irish -38.5
  • Over 54.5
  • Notre Dame -21.5 first-half

 Top pick
Stanford vs Notre Dame prop: Notre Dame -21.5 first half

I'll take Notre Dame -21.5 in the first half, up to -23.5, because I'd rather attack this talent gap before garbage time gets involved.

Stanford trailed Miami 35-0 at halftime and Wake Forest 35-3 last week, so the Cardinal have shown they can get buried early. Notre Dame also has every reason to come out sharper after sleepwalking through last week's win at North Carolina.

Laying more than three touchdowns before halftime is gross, but Stanford doesn't have a matchup edge anywhere. I'd rather invest in Notre Dame's starters creating separation early than sweat backups, conservative play-calling, and a late Stanford touchdown.
