The Rockets are pushing their way into the championship conversation, and their extra rest and size will be decisive against the Celtics tonight.

The Houston Rockets are making their mark in a suddenly wide-open Western Conference, and they enter as 4.5-point favorites for tonight's clash with the visiting Boston Celtics.

Though Boston has reeled off five straight wins against a friendly schedule, my Celtics vs. Rockets predictions favor a fresher Houston squad as Ime Udoka takes on his former team.

TOP PICK
Celtics vs Rockets prediction: Rockets -4.5

What a difference a veteran point guard makes. With Fred VanVleet back on the floor, the Houston Rockets have unlocked another gear, and they're 6-1 ATS so far this season (3-0 ATS at home).

Houston's relentless physicality makes this an especially tough spot for the Boston Celtics, who are dealing with fatigue and travel after yesterday's gritty win in Orlando while heading into their third game in four days. Amen Thompson is an ideal option for the Jayson Tatum assignment, and I'm laying the points, playable up to 5.5 or 55%.

The Rockets rank third in the league with 120.7 PPG and boast four scorers averaging 16+ PPG, but it's their length and elite rebounding (32% offensive rebounding rate) that could really tip the scales tonight.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Houston's ferocious perimeter defense is holding opponents to just 30.1% from downtown this season (third-stingiest in the NBA), and that's a formula to slow down Boston's sharpshooting wings.

Celtics vs Rockets combo

The Rockets have raced to three double-digit wins at Toyota Center this year, while the Celtics struggled to hold off the Brooklyn Nets on the second night of their previous back-to-back set. I like Houston to stay perfect at home.

Though both teams rank in the top 10 in PPG, look for their defensive strengths to be the bigger story here, bringing rebounding props to the forefront. Alperen Sengun is averaging 9.0 RPG, and he's nailed this Over in four of his five outings this season. With Steven Adams and Clint Capela on the injury report, his minutes could spike, too.

Meanwhile, Tatum has averaged 8+ boards in each of the past five seasons, and his length will be key against a Rockets team that isn't shy about crashing the glass. He's hauled in 7+ rebounds in three of his last five contests.

Celtics vs Rockets combo

  • Rockets moneyline
  • Alperen Sengun Over 7.5 rebounds
  • Jayson Tatum Over 6.5 rebounds

Celtics vs Rockets player props

Celtics player prop: Derrick White Over 3.5 assists

As usual, Derrick White is doing a little of everything for the Celtics, but I'm targeting his assists tally tonight. White has dished out 4+ dimes in five of his six outings this season while averaging 5.2 APG.

Joe Mazzulla could look to run more possessions through White when he's matched up against VanVleet, easing the burden on Tatum and Paul George, who will have Thompson and Marcus Smart draped all over them.

Houston's army of long-armed defenders will limit paths to the rim, but that suits White's drive-and-kick game. This is playable up to 4.5 at a better price.

Rockets player prop: Kevin Durant Over 21.5 points

A more balanced Houston offense has translated to fewer possessions where Kevin Durant is asked to bail the team out, but I expect the Rockets to turn to KD's jumper early and often tonight against a Boston defense that doesn't make many mistakes.

Durant is shooting 41% from beyond the arc through seven games (51% from the field overall), and he can hunt mismatches against White and Payton Pritchard. He cashed this Over in four of his six contests in October, and I'd play this up to 22.5 and 57%.
