Parker Messick is the better pitcher over Anthony Kay, and the Guardians are 63% favorites because of it. I won't pivot to the underdogs, though, instead opting for the home team's run line.

My White Sox vs. Guardians prediction today is calling for the home team to not only win but to win big.

The Cleveland Guardians are 63% favorites with a decisive starting-pitching advantage over the Chicago White Sox in this matinee AL Central clash.

Parker Messick headlines these MLB picks on Wednesday, Sept. 16, with first pitch slated for 1:10 p.m. on ESPN at Progressive Field.

Who will win White Sox vs Guardians today: Guardians -1.5

For help understanding probabilities, see our odds calculator.

Picking the Cleveland Guardians to win by multiple runs feels risky since only three teams have scored fewer runs in MLB this season. However, the starting-pitching matchup is enough of a mismatch that I'm taking the plunge, and I'm willing to play the Guardians run line to 49%.

Chicago White Sox left-hander Anthony Kay has put together some strong stretches in his return to MLB this season after two sterling seasons in Japan, but he's hit a wall. The 31-year-old southpaw has allowed 3+ runs in each of his last four starts and hasn't finished the fifth inning in any of them.

While he threw 155 innings for the Yokohama BayStars in NPB, his 145 to date in 2026 represent a career-high stateside. Fatigue appears to be setting in, but he has also been outpitching his peripherals, as his expected ERA is 5.00 (14th percentile) and significantly higher than his already dubious 4.53 ERA.

Compare that to Guardians lefty Parker Messick, who looks like the eventual runner-up in the AL Rookie of the Year odds race. He's also become quickly familiar with the White Sox lineup, allowing five earned runs with 21 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings across three starts against Chicago this season.

Messick routinely pitches deeper into games than Kay does, and the Cleveland bullpen has considerably fewer miles on it than Chicago's (524 2/3 innings to an MLB-high 705 1/3). It's enough that the Guardians can tack on an insurance run or two while keeping the White Sox bats quiet late.

Covers COVERS INTEL: While Cleveland has been spotty against lefties, midseason acquisition Jo Adell has helped, boasting a 193 wRC+ with two home runs in 37 plate appearances with his new club in the split.

White Sox vs Guardians Over/Under pick: Under 7.5

Despite Kay's recent struggles, I don't expect a high-scoring finish. I wouldn't go much beyond the current line, though, and will only play to 53%.

Progressive Field doesn't play small, and wind is forecast to be blowing in from the outfield and a bit toward right. This is expected to suppress power and scoring, per BallparkPal.

Messick doesn't rely on whiffs or high velocity to put hitters away, but he avoids barrels (4.8%) and hard contact (32.6%) at elite rates, and his six-pitch mix keeps hitters guessing and off-balance.

Chicago's offense has also fallen off a cliff in the last 30 days, with the White Sox batting .213 with a below-average 96 wRC+ in that span.

And even if the White Sox bullpen has been overworked, it's also been productive overall. I see this as more of a 3-1 or 4-2 finish.

White Sox vs Guardians home run prediction: Jo Adell

The conditions are not ideal, especially with the wind blowing left-to-right when not directly at the plate. But Adell isn't an extreme pull hitter, and he remains the best option to take Kay deep tonight.

Adell has elite bat speed (97th percentile), which will only cause problems for Kay, who struggles to avoid loud contact, especially lately. He's allowed 20 home runs in 145 innings this season (1.24 HR/9).

Don't risk more than half a unit.

White Sox vs Guardians weather

While the humidity is high and will theoretically help carry, the wind is blowing in from the outfield toward home plate. There is potential for rain in the forecast as well.
