Unfortunately, for New York Mets fans and bettors alike, it was a familiar story in their season opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. Jacob deGrom tosses a gem. The bullpen blows it. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
But with a revamped lineup that now includes superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor, this year was supposed to be different for the Mets. Can their bats get going in Game 2 of this series?

Starting pitchers
Marcus Stroman (2019: 10-13, 3.22 ERA): Stroman may have opted out of the 2020 season, but he sounds motivated to have a big season. Stroman is a master of changing speeds with several breaking pitches and a devastating sinker. He messes with the timing of hitters better than almost anyone in the big leagues and, as a result, is very hard to barrel up.
Chase Anderson (2020: 1-2, 7.22 ERA): The 2020 campaign did not go as planned for Chase Anderson. The right-hander ended up pitching just 33 2-3 innings in his first year with Toronto and put up a 7.22 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. Anderson hopes he can bounce back with a Phillies team that has high expectations this season. He relies mostly on a four-seam fastball, a changeup, and a cutter.

Moneyline pick
Monday night’s comeback win kept the Phillies perfect for the season, after an opening series sweep of the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies obviously have a deep and talented lineup led by Bryce Harper, but the offense was never going to be the problem for Philadelphia.
What held the Phillies back in 2020 was a bullpen that finished dead last in MLB when it came to ERA, WHIP, and opponent batting average. But you wouldn’t know that by looking at this year’s squad. The Phillies brought in former Ray Jose Alvarado to anchor their pen and so far they have yet to allow a run.
While the Mets have the edge in starters with Stroman toeing the rubber against Anderson, it’s a tough look when Jacob deGrom is one of your best contributors on offense. Until the Mets bats get going, and the bullpen looks trustworthy, it's hard to fade a hot Philly team as a home dog.
PREDICTION: Phillies (+105)
Over/Under pick
Here is how this game will play out. The Mets bats – which actually recorded 10 hits last night – start to get going against Anderson, who allowed opponents to hit .315 off him last season and is coming off a so-so spring where he gave up nine walks in 14 2-3 innings.
Stroman probably goes five or six strong but is likely to give up a couple of runs against a strong Phillies lineup. But once he gives the ball up, the Phillies’ hitters will start rolling. And while they aren’t scoring a ton of runs yet, they are hitting for a .256 average and worked the Mets’ bullpen for five runs on four hits and only struck out once over the last three innings.
Mets early. Phillies late. This one should sneak Over the total.
PREDICTION: Over 9 (-110)
