MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

With Clayton Kershaw toeing the slab, FanDuel opened Los Angeles a -164 favorite late Monday night, dipped to -154, rose to -184 a couple of times and is at -180 as of 7 p.m. ET. It is all Dodgers on the moneyline, at 94 percent of bets and 95 percent of cash. In fact, even laying 1.5 on the runline hasn't deterred Dodgers backers, as L.A. is seeing 91 percent of tickets/94 percent of cash in that market. The total opened at 8.5 (Under -118), with that price fluctuating between Under a slight favorite and Over a slight favorite, and it's now -110 for both. The Over is taking 60 percent of bets/56 percent of dollars.

Dodgers vs A's betting preview

Starting pitchers

Clayton Kershaw (0-1, 7.94 ERA): The future Hall of Famer was roughed up in his first start of the year, surrendering 10 hits and five earned runs through 5 2-3 innings against the Rockies.

That said, he played very well in 2020, going 6-2 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.84 WHIP during the regular season before banishing his postseason demons with two wins in the World Series.

Chris Bassitt (0-1, 5.06 ERA): Bassitt gave up three runs on four hits and a pair of walks through 5 1-3 innings of work against the Astros in Oakland's season opener. He looked sharp through the first three innings before hitting a snag in the fourth.

The veteran right-hander is coming off his best season in the majors, going 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA and a WHIP of 1.16 across 11 starts.

Moneyline pick

The Dodgers began their title defense in 2021 with an opening day loss to the Rockies but have since reeled off four straight wins, including a seven-run victory against the A's last night.

It is worth mentioning that the lone defeat came in Clayton Kershaw's previous start, but pitching at Coors Field is always tricky and the three-time Cy Young winner should bounce back to his usual excellent self today.

The 33-year-old Kershaw might not be quite as dominant as he was in his prime but he's coming off a strong season and gets to face an A's team that has struggled at the plate this year.

Oakland is off to a brutal 0-5 start to the year and has been outscored by a combined total of 45-12. The A's are batting just .172 and averaging 2.4 runs per game, and their top hitter in third baseman Matt Chapman has gone just 2-for-15 at the plate.

The Dodgers, on the other hand, are leading the majors in OPS at .947 while ranking fifth in runs per game with 7.36. While those batting numbers are no doubt inflated by that four-game set in Colorado, the Dodgers track record from last season is pretty good evidence that they can mash.

The A's are bound to win eventually but we don't think it'll happen tonight, especially with L.A. 39-12 in their last 51 games on the road. Back the Dodgers on the runline.

PREDICTION: Runline Dodgers -1.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Dodgers are coming off a massive 10-run game against Oakland, bolstered by seven runs scored in the second and third innings. Los Angeles has a murderers' row of sluggers featuring Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy and Corey Seager.

The Dodgers led the majors in both runs per game (5.77) and OPS (.820) last year and look like they'll be just as dangerous this season.

Oakland starter Chris Bassitt had a good year in 2020 but he will have a difficult time limiting the Dodgers' big bats tonight.

Although the A's play at one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in the majors, they have cashed the Over in five straight games at home. They have also gone 10-1 O/U in their last 11 games overall while the Dodgers are 9-3 to the Over in their previous 12 contests on the road. Back the Over again.

PREDICTION: Over 8 (-120)
