Germany were average and lost to Ecuador in their final Group E match at the World Cup, but that result doesn't tell the full story of their tournament. Expect a much-improved performance against another South American opponent in Paraguay.
Germany are expected to win this match, and I'm backing them to book their place in the Round of 16. Read on for my Germany vs. Paraguay predictions and World Cup picks for Monday, June 29.
TOP PICK
Who will win Germany vs Paraguay: Germany -1.5 (-105)
Paraguay shouldn't be underestimated despite scraping through to the knockout stage, as they proved capable of causing major upsets during the South American qualifiers against continental heavyweights Argentina and Brazil. This is a well-organized, reactive side with quality players, and Germany will need to assert themselves from the opening whistle.
Julian Nagelsmann's Germany have impressed with their attacking fluidity, as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Kai Havertz have linked up superbly in the final third. They put seven past Curaçao, followed that with a 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador.
Even so, Germany boast more quality in every area of the pitch. Barring a major upset, it's difficult to see them exiting the World Cup after this clash with Paraguay. Since a 2-0 defeat away to Slovakia in the qualifiers in September 2025, Germany have won 11 of 12 matches, with their only defeat coming in that meaningless game against Ecuador.
Nagelsmann wants his full-backs to push high up the pitch, and combined with the problems Germany's attackers can create in the final third, that should stretch Paraguay's defensive line to a breaking point.
I'm backing Germany to win by 2+ goals in Boston and would play this to -110.

Germany vs Paraguay Over/Under pick: Over 2.5 (-135)
Paraguay will be happy to let Germany dominate possession. That was the approach they took against both the USA and Turkey in their biggest matches of the World Cup so far, and it's difficult to imagine them trying to control a game against a team with Germany's quality across the pitch.
If Germany score early, this could open up into another high-scoring contest, much like Paraguay's 4-1 defeat to the USA. There have been at least three goals in each of Germany's last eight matches, and when they sense vulnerability, they rarely hesitate to capitalize.
They scored seven against Curaçao and, in their World Cup warm-up matches, beat Finland 4-0 and Switzerland 4-3. Before that, they rounded off their qualifying campaign with a 6-0 victory over Slovakia.
It's also worth noting that Germany haven't kept a clean sheet at the World Cup since the 2014 final. They have now gone nine consecutive World Cup matches without one. I'm expecting plenty of goals when Germany face Paraguay.
