Evan Bouchard of the Edmonton Oilers has developed into one of the best offensive defensemen in the sport, but he’s off to a slow start, going pointless in each of his first five games.
However, my Oilers vs. Red Wings predictions expect Bouchard to right the ship in Detroit on Sunday afternoon. Let’s take a closer look at my October 19 NHL picks.

Oilers vs Red Wings Best bet: Evan Bouchard Over 0.5 points (-140)
Evan Bouchard produced 67 points last year while dressing in all 82 games for the Edmonton Oilers. One of the best aspects about his campaign was his ability to hit the score sheet so consistently.
His longest point drought of the year was just four games, and he suffered through that once. Only two other times did Bouchard go even three straight without a point. He was always finding ways to contribute offensively and help score goals, be it as the shooter or facilitator.
Bouchard has gone through a miserable dry spell to start this season. He hasn’t picked up a point through five games for an Oilers squad that’s had a surprisingly difficult time finding the net.
I’d be surprised if it lasted any longer.
The Oilers have generated 11.55 expected goals, 88 chances, and 39 Grade A opportunities with Bouchard on the ice through five games. Only six of them have found the net and, again, Bouchard failed to pick up a point on any of them.
Last season the Oilers scored 135 goals on 140 expected during Bouchard’s minutes. He also was involved in nearly 50% of them.
The puck is going to start going in, and Bouchard will reap the benefits when that happens.
Oilers vs Red Wings same-game parlay
Andrew Mangiapane is off to a nice start with the Oilers. He hit the scoresheet in three of his first six games and spent most of his time in Saturday’s game riding shotgun with Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the top line. That’s a pretty good setup.
Despite a lack of puck luck, and early season finishing problems, both of Edmonton’s wins have come by multiple goals. The Detroit Red Wings' only loss was by four.
