Connor McDavid made it no secret he’d like to score more goals this season. However, his account remains empty through four games.

My Oilers vs. Devils predictions see that changing in one of the marquee games of today’s slate.

Let’s dig deeper into my NHL picks for October 18.

Oilers vs Devils prediction

Oilers vs Devils Best bet: Connor McDavid anytime goal (+140)

Connor McDavid is yet to score, but it’s not for a lack of opportunity.

The league’s best player has tested opposing netminders, generating 17 scoring chances — 15 shots on goal — and nine Grade A looks through just four games. That has translated to 2.29 expected goals, an average of 0.57 per.

McDavid is sandwiched between Leon Draisaitl and Shane Pinto for 29th in the league thus far. McDavid’s superstar teammate has scored three times while the latter has already found twine six times.

What’s important is McDavid’s getting looks. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know they’re going to lead to results sooner rather than later when we’re talking about such a talented player — one who has a 64-goal campaign in his back pocket.

The chances should continue to be there against the Devils, who rank in the Bottom 10 in goals and expected goals allowed at 5-on-5.

While their penalty killing metrics are exceptional, slowing down McDavid with extra time and space to operate will still be a huge challenge.

Oilers vs Devils same-game parlay

Connor McDavid had multiple points in 45% of his games last season. He’s been a little snake bitten in the early going, but when he scores, the floodgates should open.

Evan Bouchard has piled up 117 assists over the last two years but has zero this season. He spends a lot of time with the big guns at 5-on-5 and quarterbacks a lethal top power play, so it’s difficult for this stretch to last much longer.

Luke Hughes has four points through four games, ranks third on the Devils in shot attempts, and is one shift behind Brett Pesce for the team lead in ice time. He’s very involved offensively.

Oilers vs Devils SGP

  • Connor McDavid Over 1.5 points
  • Evan Bouchard Over 0.5 assists
  • Luke Hughes Over 0.5 points

Oilers vs Devils odds
