The Edmonton Oilers host the Calgary Flames in a Pacific Division battle at Rogers Place to open their respective seasons on Wednesday, October 8.

My Flames vs. Oilers predictions and NHL picks call for Edmonton winning a low-scoring Battle of Alberta with a big game from superstar Connor McDavid tonight.

Flames vs Oilers prediction

Flames vs Oilers Best bet: Under 6.5 (-135)

The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers scored six or fewer goals in each of their three meetings last year, and tonight's season opener will continue that trend.

Calgary has forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Martin Pospisil on injured reserve with undisclosed injuries, and the Flames weren’t an offensive force last year to begin with — scoring the fourth-fewest goals per game (2.68).

Edmonton also has winger Zach Hyman (wrist) on injured reserve, while top-four defenseman Jake Walman isn’t expected to suit up for the opener because of an undisclosed injury.

Returning to the Flames, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a No. 1 goalie Dustin Wolf start strong in his second full season. He posted a rock-solid .910 SV% and 2.64 GAA with an eighth-ranked 24.39 goals saved above expected.

At the opposite end of the rink, Oil starter Stuart Skinner has been plagued with inconsistency the past two years, but I’m not anticipating the Flames generating enough offense to do the heavy lifting to send this total Over the number.

Flames vs Oilers same-game parlay

The Oilers finished the regular season 25-13-3 on home ice last season while crushing the underlying numbers to the tune of a fourth-ranked Corsi For percentage and third-ranked expected goals percentage.

I’m also expecting the one-two punch of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to be a matchup nightmare for the Flames tonight.

Speaking strictly to McDavid, he’s paced the league in points per 60 on home ice over the past three years, including racking up 54 points across 33 games at Rogers Place last year.

Of course, he’s also clicked with Draisaitl for a dominant 8.2 goals and 6.76 expected goals per 60 minutes while driving 5-on-5 possession with a 60.0 Corsi For percentage since the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.
