Canadiens vs Golden Knights Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Habs Come Crashing Down

The Canadiens have had better results than pretty much anybody anticipated but they also haven't played many top-shelf opponents. The Golden Knights will be their first major test and our betting picks don't exactly predict a passing grade for the Habs.

Two of the NHL’s hottest teams over the past week collide at T-Mobile Arena tonight when the Vegas Golden Knights host the Montreal Canadiens.

Vegas will look to extend its season-opening point streak to 10 games while Montreal comes into the contest with four wins in its last five contests. NHL odds are firmly on the home team's side, however, as the Knights are considerable moneyline favorites.

Will the hosts’ stingy defense help them keep their streak alive against a hot Habs squad? We’ll discuss in our Canadiens vs Golden Knights NHL picks and predictions for Monday, October 30.

Canadiens vs Golden Knights predictions

After suffering their first loss of the season to the Blackhawks on Friday in overtime, the Vegas Golden Knights got back into the win column on Saturday with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Kings. It was an uncharacteristically poor defensive performance from Vegas as it was outshot 39-30 by Los Angeles — tied for the most shots the Golden Knights have surrendered in a game this season and just the third time they’ve allowed more than 28.

The Golden Knights got off to a rock-solid start to the season on the defensive side of things, allowing just five total goals through their first four games, but have now given up at least three in four of their last five outings. Still, Vegas ranks third in the NHL with just 2.22 goals against per game.

Adin Hill is expected to get the start against the Habs tonight as he looks to rebound from a couple of rocky outings after allowing seven goals over his last two games The Golden Knights netminder has been good on the whole, though, owning an impressive 2.16 goals against average and a solid .915 save percentage through five contests.

The Montreal Canadiens have been scoring at an okay clip, averaging 3.13 goals per game — tied for 15th in the league — though they’ve had a pretty soft schedule so far. Vegas will certainly represent Montreal’s toughest challenge of this early season and with the Habs averaging just 28.8 shots per game, I don’t see them having a ton of success against a stingy Golden Knights defense. Hill just needs to be good — not great — and Vegas should be able to hold Montreal to Under 2.5 goals.

My best bet: Canadiens team total Under 2.5 (-133 at SIA)

Canadiens vs Golden Knights same-game parlay

Canadiens TT Under 2.5

Golden Knights moneyline

Mark Stone anytime goal

Along with taking the Under on 2.5 goals for Montreal, we’ll go big on Vegas for this game, taking the Golden Knights on the moneyline and rounding out the same-game parlay by banking on a Mark Stone goal.

The defending Stanley Cup champions have clearly been the NHL’s best team to start this season and are obvious favorites against a Habs team that hasn’t faced a test like this so far. Vegas’ superior depth should give it the edge and I expect the Golden Knights to control play for most of the game.

Stone has had a slow start to the season in terms of scoring with just two goals in nine games, though the Vegas captain did pot one last time out and has recorded both tallies over his last four outings. Stone leads all Golden Knights skaters with 10 career goals against the Canadiens in 24 meetings, so he’s certainly had some success vs. Montreal in the past.

Canadiens vs Golden Knights moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Golden Knights come into this contest as the odds-on favorite, opening at -220 on the moneyline and creeping up as high as -275 at some books by Monday morning, and I don’t see any reason to go against the grain tonight.

The Canadiens have been heating up with four wins in their last five outings but you’ve got to consider their competition over that span. They’ve defeated the Capitals, Sabres, Blue Jackets, and Jets with three overtime or shootout wins while getting dismantled by the Devils. In fact, the Jets are the only team that made the playoffs last season that the Habs have defeated so far.

Vegas is on a whole other level compared to most of Montreal’s opponents thus far and I suspect that will be apparent on the ice tonight.

Tonight’s total opened at 6.5 goals and while the head-to-head trends may suggest a high-scoring game, I still like the Under based on Vegas’ stingy defense.

The Over is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings between these two clubs but the Golden Knights have improved significantly on the blue line so far this season, allowing about half a goal less per game compared to last year.

Vegas has allowed two or fewer goals in five of nine contests this year while the Under is 4-1 in their five home games.
