With both offenses struggling to find the back of the net, tonight's Canadiens vs. Capitals prediction expects goals to be at a premium.
The Washington Capitals are slight 54% favorites over the Montreal Canadiens at Novig, but the better price falls on the Under (50%), and that's where we'll invest.
Tap into my NHL picks for Wednesday, Oct. 14, and let's sweep the slate one more time.
TOP PICK
Canadiens vs Capitals prediction: Under 6.5
These teams have struggled to score at 5-on-5, and neither is clicking enough on the power play for me to consider anything other than the Under.
The Montreal Canadiens are converting at just a 10% clip on the man advantage, ranking 30th in the NHL. Meanwhile, the Caps own the 27th-ranked unit, hitting at just 13%.
Montreal has established itself as one of the NHL's stingiest defensive teams in front of Jakub Dobes, consistently forcing opponents to the perimeter and limiting quality scoring chances.
The Canadiens have surrendered just five high-danger opportunities all season, the fewest in the league, making life incredibly difficult for teams trying to hem them in their own zone.

Canadiens vs Capitals combo
While I expect this game to stay Under the total, I'm turning to the big guns on either side to take us home in the shots department. Nick Suzuki is averaging 6.3 shot attempts per game, good for 26th in the NHL, and has gone Over this number in three of his five games.
Jakob Chychrun quarterbacks the Washington power play and has peaked at eight shots on goal in a game this season. I'll back him to reach at least three for the fourth time.
Canadiens vs Capitals combo
- Canadiens/Capitals Under 6.5
- Jakob Chychrun 3+ SOG
- Nick Suzuki 3+ SOG
Canadiens vs Capitals player prop: Nick Suzuki 3+ SOG
Suzuki has been firing the puck at an impressive rate to start the season, averaging 6.3 shot attempts per game, the 26th-highest mark in the NHL. That steady volume has helped him clear this line in three of his first five games.
With Suzuki on the first line and the top power-play unit, while averaging close to 22 minutes of ice time per night, we should absolutely expect him to clear this line.
Canadiens vs Capitals goal scorer: Alex Ovechkin
Backing the Great 8 against a struggling goaltender in Jakub Dobes? Sign me up. Alex Ovechkin has gotten off to a slow start in his retirement campaign, but he's in a good spot to pot his second goal of the season against the Canadiens.
We're getting a great price as Ovechkin's ice time continues to dwindle, but he's still a stud on the power play, and riding his slap shot to the bank tonight.
