Blues vs Golden Knights predictions

Despite enduring a rare difficult stretch of hockey to conclude November, the Vegas Golden Knights have started to turn things around with two consecutive three-goal victories over the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals. Things are likely to continue to improve as the Knights host the St. Louis Blues, a team they are better than in virtually every aspect of the game.

At 5-on-5, the Golden Knights rank 12th in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) and 15th in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Meanwhile, St. Louis ranks 19th and 30th, respectively, in those two categories.

Not only is Vegas better both offensively and defensively, but it also owns the advantage in net as goaltender Adin Hill is expected to make his return to the crease this evening. After missing Saturday’s game due to a lower-body injury, he looks to pick up right where he left off.

Through 14 starts, Hill is 10-2-2 with a .935 SV% and 1.87 GAA, the two best marks in the entire league. Across the ice, goaltender Jordan Binnington is expected to get the nod for the Blues.

St. Louis’ main chance of winning this game is through a massive performance from Binnington, who has not been as good as Hill but has had success in his own right. However, he is 0-1-1 with a fade-worthy .871 SV% and 3.89 GAA over his past two starts against the Knights.

Vegas boasts the advantage on the micro level of the game as well, pacing St. Louis in faceoff percentage, power-play percentage, and penalty-kill percentage.

Blues vs Golden Knights same-game parlay

Golden Knights -1.5

Over 6

While Binnington playing hero is certainly possible, I don’t think that will be the case tonight.

First, Binnington has struggled in each of his past two starts against the Golden Knights. The Over hit in each of those two losses.

Second, St. Louis’ blue line is terrible as it ranks third-to-last in xGA/60 at 5-on-5. Both teams rank higher in xGF/60 than they do in that category at even strength.

Blues vs Golden Knights moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Golden Knights opened as a -220 favorite and have since been bet down to their current price of -185. This buy-back makes sense considering two dollars is a very long number when Binnington will be in net for the Blues, but I also think that -185 is an over-correction.

That brings us to the total, which is between 6 and 6.5, depending on the book. While two strong goaltenders could keep this a low-scoring game, both blue lines have struggled in comparison to the offenses.

There have been seven or more total goals scored in four of the past five meetings between these two teams.
