The Saints ain't great, but they're better than the walking disaster that is the Jets, so lay the points with New Orleans, per Ed Scimia's early leans for Week 16.

The New Orleans Saints will try to make it three straight wins as they host the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.

While both teams have suffered through long seasons, New Orleans is playing better as of late, and I’m taking it to cover in my Jets vs. Saints predictions below.

Let’s take a look at how bettors can approach the early lines to this game in my free NFL picks for Sunday, December 21.

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Jets vs Saints spread pick: Saints -4.5

There's been no point in the season where the New York Jets have really played well for an extended period, but at least they were coming through for bettors during November.

New York is back to playing like one of the worst teams in the NFL over the past two weeks, with the defense being entirely unable to stop opponents, while Brady Cook has thrown just one touchdown pass against five interceptions in his first two NFL games.

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints are coming off two straight wins, both of which came as underdogs, and have covered in three straight weeks.

The defense has stepped up, allowing just 17.8 ppg over the last five weeks. Tyler Shough isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire, but he has led the offense to just enough success to get wins, even without Alvin Kamara on the field.

While these teams have combined for just seven wins in total this year, the Jets and Saints are heading in completely different directions. I’m taking New Orleans to cover at home, and would likely keep backing them as long as the spread remains under a touchdown.

Early Jets vs Saints total pick: Under 40.5

Regardless of any recent success, these are two of the worst offenses in the NFL.

The Saints are averaging 16.1 ppg on the year — their recent uptick in scoring still hasn’t seem them score more than 24 points since Oct. 5 — while the Jets are only slightly more productive at 19.7 ppg.

New York’s total is also buoyed by a couple big games earlier in the season, as it has been held to 14 points or fewer in five of their last nine games.

It's highly unlikely that the Jets are suddenly going to find a way to move the ball consistently anytime soon.

Cook has a paltry 44.3 quarterback rating and is using these games to develop as a quarterback, not with any expectation that he’s going to lead New York to wins. Breece Hall has run for 900 yards, but just three scores on the year. And New Orleans has held its last five opponents to 24 points or less.

We can expect the Jets to come in well below that number, and that gives plenty of room for the Saints to score while still hitting the Under. New Orleans just doesn’t put up many points, no matter the opponent. Eeven in their wins, they’re only averaging 21.8 ppg.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
