A Saturday showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders in Week 16 was supposed to carry a lot more weight when the schedule released back in the spring.

Flash forward to mid-December, and Philadelphia is the only team with something to play for heading into this NFC East rivalry.

My early Eagles vs. Commanders predictions and NFL picks size up the opening odds and line adjustments ahead of December 20.

Early Eagles vs Commanders spread pick: Eagles -5.5

-115 at FanDuel

The Philadelphia Eagles opened as 5.5-point road favorites in Week 16, with bookies testing the market waters and how the betting public feels about Philadelphia after it rolled the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15.

The Eagles put in their best two-way performance in a long time, but it came against the Raiders. However, it would seem early action is sold on Philly, with vig rising on -5.5 and some books already at Eagles -6.

I actually bet Philadelphia -5.5 right out of the gate on Sunday night, grabbing it just shy of the key number. There’s a shot the Eagles get their two best players back on the field in Week 16, with DT Jalen Carter and OT Lane Johnson missing recent games.

Should we get positive injury updates on those two from practice, I could see this spread going to Eagles -6 across the industry and even flirting with -6.5 close to Saturday.

Early Eagles vs Commanders total pick: Over 44.5

-110 at FanDuel

Philadelphia’s offense finally showed signs of life against Las Vegas on Sunday. The Eagles amassed 31 points on 387 yards while picking up 27 first downs and going a stellar 10-for-14 on third-down conversions.

There are still a lot of kinks to work out for Philadelphia’s offense, so I don’t expect the Eagles to hold back should they jump out to a quick start. And they likely will, considering the Washington Commanders’ defense.

Washington did beat New York 29-21 but was outgained by the Giants in yardage and in first downs, and nearly coughed up the lead late in the fourth quarter.

The Commanders’ pass defense ranks among the worst in the NFL and has allowed a ton of explosive plays, which is perfect practice for this Philly playbook that needs to hit more home runs.

The extended forecast for D.C. looks great, with no snow or rain, light winds, and temperatures above freezing.
