Was the bye week what New Mexico State needed after an ugly loss to FIU two weeks ago? Now, the Aggies look to regroup and get back in the win column against Sam Houston.

A fun Conference USA showdown between the New Mexico State Aggies and Sam Houston Bearkats goes down on Wednesday night.

With plenty of time to prepare and a one-dimensional Bearkats offense to contend with, I have no issue backing the Aggies in my New Mexico State vs. Sam Houston prediction.

My college football picks have New Mexico State handing Sam Houston its sixth loss of the season.

Kickoff is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

 TOP PICK
Who will win New Mexico State vs Sam Houston: New Mexico State moneyline

New Mexico State is coming off a tough 22-3 road loss to FIU two weeks ago. The Aggies outgained FIU by 10 yards, though some of that came from playing from behind and having to throw. The Aggies also ran nearly 10 fewer plays and turned the ball over three times, with two of those turnovers leading directly to FIU points.

Coming out of the bye, New Mexico State should be ready to clean things up, making this the perfect get-right spot.

The game plan is straightforward against a Sam Houston offense that relies heavily on the passing game. The Bearkats rank 133rd in rushing attempts per game and dead last in rushing yards per game, averaging just 67.4 yards on the ground this season.

If the Aggies can contain the Bearkats' passing attack, they should come out on top. With plenty of time to prepare, New Mexico State will be ready to get back in the win column.

It's Aggies or nothing for me in this spot.

Again, similar to my South Alabama vs. Marshall prediction, I'm willing to pay the juice on New Mexico State to win. College football gets nutty, and I don't want to worry about any shenanigans when I can back the winner at a reasonable price.

Playable up to 60%. Take New Mexico State -2.5 if the win probability exceeds 60%.

Covers COVERS INTEL: New Mexico State beat Western Kentucky 34-13 in Week 5, racking up more than 350 yards while averaging nearly 6.0 yards per play. Sam Houston, meanwhile, lost to that same Western Kentucky team 16-3, managing only 177 total yards at 3.1 yards per play. If the Aggies can replicate that Week 5 performance, this could get ugly for the Bearkats.

New Mexico State vs Sam Houston Over/Under pick: Under 45.5

The comical thing about liking the Under in this matchup is that it has nothing to do with either defense being good. These offenses are brutal, especially Sam Houston's, which is averaging only 11.6 points per game (135th). Conversely, its defense ranks 10th in the country in fewest yards allowed per game.

As mentioned above, the Bearkats' reliance on the passing game limits their ability to open up the offense. With the Aggies having plenty of time to prepare, New Mexico State is the team most likely to contribute to the total here. That isn't saying much, as the Aggies are averaging fewer than 20 points per game this season.

Under.

I wouldn't take this any lower than the current number, as the total originally opened at 50.5.
