While the Celtics made moves this summer, the Pistons' drama didn't lead to big-name additions. Our expert is banking on Boston's defense and 3-point variance to deliver a winning start.

My Celtics vs. Pistons prediction favors a deep Boston roster that thrives away from home.

After two turbulent NBA summers, the Boston Celtics (53%) and Detroit Pistons start the new season this afternoon at Little Caesars Arena, with lofty expectations in a much-improved Eastern Conference.

Read on for my free NBA picks ahead of this Tues. Oct. 20 clash ahead of the 3 p.m. ET tip at Little Caesars Arena on NBC.

 TOP PICK
Celtics vs Pistons prediction: Celtics moneyline

The new-look Boston Celtics are banking on Paul George, Mitchell Robinson, and future flexibility, but I expect the same old elite road form — led by a healthy Jayson Tatum.

Boston went 28-16 straight up away from home last season (27-17 against the spread), and the C's stingy defense—which allowed a league-low 107.2 points per game—could reach new heights with Robinson barricading the paint.

The Detroit Pistons opted for continuity, but the after-effects of the Jalen Duren saga are a wild card, and Detroit did little this offseason to relieve the playmaking burden on Cade Cunningham.

With Derrick White and Jordan Walsh to throw at Cade, Boston can shut down driving lanes without giving up open looks elsewhere.

The bench is another swing factor for the Celtics, and Joe Mazzulla will unleash Payton Pritchard and Hugo Gonzalez in a relentless second unit.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Mazzulla loves math, so look for Boston's 3-point barrage to tip the scales. The Celtics shot 42.1 threes per game last season (fourth-most in the NBA), while the Pistons averaged just 30.9 attempts from beyond the arc (second-fewest).

Celtics vs Pistons combo

The Celtics were 21-6 SU as road favorites last season, and I'm picking the visitors to start the post-Jaylen Brown era with a win at Little Caesars Arena.

The Under has been a winning ticket in five of the past six meetings between these squads, and that's where I'm looking tonight. Both teams were among the stingiest defenses last year, and Detroit's scoring is capped by starting two non-shooters.

Even with Robinson replacing Neemias Queta in the starting five, Tatum will have a big role on the boards, especially if this contest turns into a rock fight.

He averaged 10 rebounds per game in his 16 post-injury regular-season outings (and 10.7 in the playoffs). He's adept at swooping in for rebounds when the Boston big men are dragged into pick-and-roll actions.

Celtics vs Pistons player props

Celtics player prop: Derrick White Over 4.5 assists

White's shooting fell off a cliff last season, but his passing remained rock solid, with 5.4 assists per game. I see the do-it-all guard starting fast on his dimes tally here, freeing Tatum from over-dribbling against Ausar Thompson.

Even in low-scoring contests, White is a key facilitator for Boston's 3-point snipers, and he can lean into his playmaking when sharing the court with Tatum, George, and Pritchard.

The Celtics hinted at a faster pace in the preseason, and that's another area where White can unlock easy baskets with hit-ahead passes.

Pistons player prop: Jalen Duren Over 9.5 rebounds

Looking for someone to bring the fire to this season opener? Look no further than Duren, who's had his game picked apart all summer. His matchup with Robinson will be a key battleground, and he averaged 10.5 rebounds per game last year.

Duren averages 10.6 boards against the Celtics in his career, and his athleticism provides an edge in chasing down misses from Boston's 3-point barrage.

With both teams shaking off the rust, I'll take Detroit's best rebounder to cash in.
