Perhaps the most intriguing dark horse in the SEC Tournament, the Vanderbilt Commodores need to spring a second straight upset of the Tennessee Volunteers if they want to advance out of the quarterfinals.

My Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt predictions expect the Commodores to do just that, but mostly these college basketball picks anticipate a high-scoring game on Friday, March 13.

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt prediction

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt best bet

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt best bet: Over 146 (-110)

Both the Tennesee Volunteers and the Vanderbilt Commodores lean on their defenses more than their offenses, but this total is simply two buckets too low, particularly given the tournament setting.

These two met in their regular-season finale, the Commodores springing an 86-82 road upset, clearing that total by 22.5 points despite combining to shoot 11 of 34 from deep.

This SEC quarterfinal should not clear the total by that much, but an adequate shooting showing in a tight game should assure 150 points.

Four straight Vanderbilt games have gone Over the total.

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt same-game parlay

In what is effectively a pick’em, siding with the best free-throw shooting team in the SEC against the second-worst free-throw shooting team in the SEC makes too much sense.

But some faith should also go to Tennessee freshman forward Nate Ament simply because of the confidence he gained going 4-for-6 from deep yesterday.

Our beyond the arc SGP: Vols giveth, Vols taketh

Doubting Ja’Kobi Gillespie to hit three 3-pointers stems from expecting Ament to take an abundance of shots. As the latter took 15 attempts yesterday, including six from deep, Gillespie went just 0-for-2 from deep.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
