The Kentucky Wildcats are rich in pro-ready talent and can score points inside and out. Kentucky is well-coached, versatile, and can match up well against the top teams in the East Region. The Wildcats ranked No. 25 in the all-telling adjusted defensive efficiency rating at KenPom and isn’t a bad return as high as +950 to win the NCAA Tournament title.
It’s a who’s who of top college coaches in my Final Four, with Mark Few butting heads with John Calipari and Jay Wright dueling with Bill Self. Gonzaga, Kentucky, Kansas, and Villanova are all great two-way teams packed with scoring depth and among the defensive elite. Villanova is my biggest “long shot” to crack the semifinals as a No. 2 seed, pegged at +550 to make the Final Four.
Biggest upset prediction
In terms of seeding and point spread, No. 13 Vermont taking down No. 4 Arkansas as a 5-point underdog is my biggest upset pick in the Round of 64. The Catamounts are very disruptive on defense and will slow down the Hogs’ transition attack.
Other upsets include:
- No. 10 San Francisco beating No. 7 Murray State (even though the Dons opened as 1-point chalk)
- No. 6 Colorado State beating No. 11 Michigan (Wolverines opened -2.5 even as the lower seed)
- No. 13 South Dakota State edging No. 4 Providence (SDSU +2).
12 over 5 upset
The Indiana Hoosiers are my lone No. 12 over No. 5 upset this March. Indiana ranked as the top defense in the Big Ten and has rounded into form on the other end of the floor in the season’s home stretch, making a nice run in the conference tournament. The Hoosiers are long and active, clean the glass, and draw even the most polished offenses into some ugly ball. Indiana could be that annual First Four team that makes it deep into the bracket.
Cinderella team prediction
The Vermont Catamounts are my Cinderella team in a very chalky bracket. Vermont ran the table in the America East, boasting an average margin of +14.1 points (third highest in the country). They aren't afraid to tangle with power conference teams, having played Purdue and Maryland in non-conference pay. Vermont is a bad matchup for up-tempo Arkansas in the Round of 64. It will also be able to edge UConn (or NMSU) in the Round of 32 to crack the Sweet 16 – a +750 proposition.
