Buccaneers touchdown pick: Bucky Irving
With just a single touchdown across the opening four weeks of the season, it looked like Bucky Irving might have some TD regression this year, but he’s scored five in the four games since.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have leaned into the run, with him getting 91 carries in that time, though weather impacted one of those games.
He’s not just a running back; he's also a receiver, with a 16% target share with Baker Mayfield this season, compared to just 6.4% without him.
Even with Kenneth Gainwell getting a lot of work, Irving still recorded 67 rushing yards over expected and forced 10 missed tackles last week. He’s the man to be backing in this offense.
Bears touchdown pick: Colston Loveland
Much like Irving, Colston Loveland had a slow start in the Chicago Bears' offense, with just five catches across the opening three weeks, but his targets and receptions have increased since.
He’s had six or more receptions in each of the past three games and scored two touchdowns, while also ranking fifth in the NFL for red zone targets for a tight end.
Without Cole Kmet, now on injured reserve, his role grew even bigger. He was tied for the most routes run on the team, running a route on 83% of the team’s dropbacks, well up on his season average of 73%.
First touchdown scorer pick: Luther Burden
In truth, I was torn between picking Loveland and Luther Burden for the Bears anytime touchdown selection, but the Bears’ wideout is better suited to betting to score first.
After all, he opened the scoring in the team’s win last week and caught four passes on that opening drive.
He’s now scored in back-to-back games, bringing his season total to three TDs, and he had his second-highest number of targets last week.
What really shines is how efficient he is, and Caleb Williams targets him frequently when he’s on the field, throwing him the ball on 39% of his routes.
He’s also tied sixth among NFL wide receivers for red zone targets.
Long-shot touchdown pick: Sam Roush
With Kmet injured, we saw a lot of rookie Sam Roush last week against the Seattle Seahawks. He didn’t get targeted once, but he took over much of Kmet’s role as a blocker, playing on 53% of the offense’s snaps, up from a 25% season average.
He’s far from a certainty to score, but when you’re looking for a long shot, you focus on opportunity, and we know we’ll see plenty of Roush on the field, and we do know the team targeted Kmet in the red zone occasionally.
Even though he primarily lined up to block, he still ran routes on 33% of the team’s dropbacks.
Buccaneers vs Bears touchdown combo
Ben Johnson has this offense firing, and Burden and Loveland offer the best mix of efficiency and opportunity, and lead their position groups in red zone targets.
