Expert NBA ATS picks: Nov. 4
Hawks vs Wizards:
Wizards +2.5
The Washington Wizards have won their last two games by a combined 25 points, and they've held both opponents to under 100 points. They're eighth in defensive rating, and the Atlanta Hawks may be missing a key piece, as Jalen Johnson is questionable with an ankle sprain. I'll take Washington with the points.
76ers vs Pistons:
Pistons -2.5
Both teams are flourishing, but I like the Detroit Pistons at home. They've won three straight, rank first in defensive rating, and already beat the Philadelphia 76ers on October 25, 106-93. Detroit is also giving up just 100.3 ppg.
Hornets vs Nets:
Nets +3.5
The Charlotte Hornets have dropped four in a row, averaging an NBA-worst 97.4 ppg so far. They've also been held to under 100 points in three of their last four contests. The Brooklyn Nets are by no means elite, but they've covered this number in four of seven games, and Charlotte is in horrible shape.
Bucks vs Celtics:
Bucks +11.5
The Milwaukee Bucks are a defensive liability, but they're worth a look ATS tonight. Jayson Tatum is likely out due to rest, while Payton Pritchard is questionable. With the Boston Celtics potentially missing two of their top guys, I'll take the Bucks with the points. If things change and both play, though, I'll confidently back Boston.
Bulls vs Knicks:
Bulls +12.5
The New York Knicks might be the defending champions, but they've struggled so far. N.Y. is just 3-4, averaging only 106.4 ppg. That ranks 27th in the Association. The main reason I'm taking the Chicago Bulls with the points is that the Knicks simply aren't scoring consistently enough for me to believe they can cover this number. New York is also 1-6 ATS.
Jazz vs Pelicans:
Pelicans -5.5
The New Orleans Pelicans are just 3-4 overall but own a 5-2 ATS record, and they're up against a Utah Jazz team that has lost five straight. New Orleans has won three in a row and is averaging 121.9 ppg, compared to only 107 for Utah. With the hosts also missing key frontcourt pieces, the Pels should feast.
Pacers vs Grizzlies:
Grizzlies -6.5
The Memphis Grizzlies are red-hot, winning six of their first seven games, and they will take on the Tyrese Haliburton-less Indiana Pacers tonight. Memphis is averaging a league-best 123 ppg, and the Pacers were already struggling on both ends with Haliburton. The Grizzlies should easily cover.
Cavaliers vs Thunder:
Thunder -2.5
The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 117-112 earlier this week, led by 43 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and now they meet again tonight in OKC. The Thunder's rotation is severely depleted, but they remain solid defensively, and when Shai plays like an MVP, they're still hard to beat. Expect another close contest.
Timberwolves vs Rockets:
Timberwolves +8.5
The Minnesota Timberwolves have stayed competitive without Anthony Edwards, and their second-ranked defense should keep this close tonight. The Houston Rockets have looked fantastic, but Minny is 7-1 ATS and has the profile on both ends to give Houston a run for their money.
Raptors vs Nuggets:
Raptors +4.5
I'm liking the Toronto Raptors with the points against the Denver Nuggets. Toronto has looked solid and has a +7.7 scoring margin, compared to -2.4 for Denver. It's Top 7 in ppg and pace, while the Nuggets are 23rd in defensive rating. The visitors can make this clash very competitive.
Trail Blazers vs Suns:
Blazers -2.5
The Portland Trail Blazers are 5-1 and have won all four road games, including Monday's victory over Denver. The Phoenix Suns are surrendering 122.8 ppg and lost their first meeting with Portland by 41 points. I'll back the visitors to cover another modest spread.
Mavericks vs Spurs:
Mavericks +11.5
The San Antonio Spurs have won five straight, but two of those victories came by 10 points or fewer. The Dallas Mavericks are 4-3 ATS, and laying double digits against them feels steep. I'll take the cushion and back Dallas to keep this respectable.
Lakers vs Kings:
Lakers -11.5
The Los Angeles Lakers are averaging 122.5 ppg and have won four straight, while the Sacramento Kings are surrendering 124.3 points per contest. Sacramento is also missing key frontcourt pieces, including Keegan Murray. I'll back the Lakers' offense to exploit this mismatch and cover.
Heat vs Clippers:
Clippers +4.5
The Miami Heat are allowing 123.9 ppg and have covered just twice in seven games. The LA Clippers have struggled too, but Miami's defensive shortcomings make it hard to lay 4.5 points on the road. I'll take the home underdog to keep this one competitive.
