The Rays offer a friendlier path and better price than the Dodgers, while the Cubs bring real longshot upside into October.

The temperature drops and tensions rise; October baseball is here, and we have 12 teams battling for the Commissioner’s Trophy.

It’s simply the best time of the year. But where does the value lie in the World Series futures odds?

Which roster is perfectly constructed for October baseball? Which team has the easiest path to glory?

Let’s dive into my MLB picks for both the American League and National League and take a stab at a World Series sleeper.

National League predictions: Are the Dodgers worth the price?

You’re not going to catch me telling you not to bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers to three-peat. Their trade-deadline acquisition of Tarik Skubal gives them the deepest rotation in baseball, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell rounding out an elite group.

Their fourth-best bullpen ERA in the National League makes them a juggernaut. Ending the year ninth in team DRS is a nice cherry on top, too, and we haven’t even discussed the offense yet.

Offensively, the star power is undeniable, with a lineup anchored by Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and the late-season surge of Kyle Tucker. The Dodgers' offense ranks:

  • 2nd in MLB in OPS+ (109)
  • 3rd in on-base percentage (.338)
  • 7th in home runs (204)

While only four franchises in MLB history have won three consecutive World Series titles, Los Angeles possesses the championship pedigree to pull it off.

The verdict on the Dodgers

Are they the best bet on the board? At 30% implied probability, there isn't much value left to extract.

The National League path presents significant landmines: the Dodgers must navigate past either the Atlanta Braves or Philadelphia Phillies before a potential matchup against the 103-win Milwaukee Brewers.

Rather than paying the heavy Dodgers premium, the real betting value sits in the American League.

American League predictions: Why the Rays deserve your attention

Despite operating with a modest $98.3-million payroll, the 98-win Tampa Bay Rays are uniquely positioned for a World Series run. They boast arguably the easiest path to the Fall Classic, opening against either an Aaron Judge-less New York Yankees team or the 87-win Boston Red Sox. Waiting further down the bracket are the Cleveland Guardians, Chicago White Sox, or Houston Astros — all three teams will be playing with borrowed time when the ALCS rolls around.

Like Los Angeles, Tampa Bay features an elite, top-heavy rotation suited for the postseason:

  • Drew Rasmussen: Boasts a 3.06 xERA, one of the best marks in MLB among qualified pitchers, and a 4.8% walk rate that ranks in the 97th percentile.
  • Freddy Peralta: The trade-deadline acquisition posted a dominant 0.96 ERA across five September starts.
  • Nick Martinez: Is having the best season of his career, posting a 3.98 xERA.
  • Shane McLanahan: Hasn’t been ruled out for the ALCS yet.

Offensively, Junior Caminero nearly stole the American League MVP from Yordan Alvarez, finishing the year with 42 home runs on the back of a .884 OPS and .499 xSLG. He’s the perfect anchor for a lineup looking to win its first World Series in franchise history.

Yandy Diaz is a strong complement. His .281 xBA ranks in the 91st percentile, and he’s one of the best hitters in the bigs at putting the ball in play. When you add Chandler Simpson, who led the American League in stolen bases with 46 while hitting .300, and a high-OBP table-setter like Jonathan Aranda, this team is designed to manufacture runs and is perfectly constructed to play deep into October.

The verdict on the Rays

At 11% implied probability, you are securing the top seed in the American League — complete with rest, home-field advantage throughout the AL bracket, and elite pitching depth — at three times the payout of the Dodgers.

Tampa Bay offers premier postseason win probability without paying the heavy Dodgers tax.

World Series sleeper: Dabble on the Cubs

The Chicago Cubs enter October as a dangerous dark-horse contender built to capitalize on the variance of short postseason series. Trading at just 4% implied probability, they represent the best flier on the board.

Why the Cubs can make a deep run

  • Deep rotation: Shota Imanaga and veteran front-line starter Kevin Gausman offer two distinct, high-level looks at the top of the rotation, complemented by reliable depth in Matthew Boyd and Clay Holmes.
  • Game-changing star power: Offensively, Chicago boasts a dynamic centerpiece in MVP candidate Pete Crow-Armstrong, who became just the seventh player in MLB history to join the exclusive 40-40 club.
  • Elite defense & run prevention: The Cubs rank first in baseball with 116 total Defensive Runs Saved (DRS).

Yes, their path through the NL bracket is difficult. They have to take down the San Diego Padres and Brewers before a potential NLCS date with the Dodgers.

However, that’s exactly why we’re getting this price. With elite run prevention, rotation depth, and a deep lineup, Chicago carries massive upside for futures bettors.

Key takeaways for World Series futures bettors

  1. Pass on the Dodgers: The low payout doesn't justify the NL playoff gauntlet.
  2. Target the Rays: Excellent value for an AL top seed with rest and home-field advantage.
  3. Flier on the Cubs: A high-upside longshot backed by elite defense and 40-40 star power.
