White Sox vs Brewers Picks and Predictions: Pitching Will Be The Story As Aces Clash

Pitching will be the story in Milwaukee tonight, as the Brewers send Corbin Burnes to the mound against Chicago's Carlos Rodon. Our MLB picks predictably don't expect many runs — but are we siding with the home side to win again?

The Milwaukee Brewers earned a win over the Chicago White Sox last night, and the two now meet again tonight at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

Both teams sent out fantastic starters in the series opener, but tonight's matchup features even better arms on the bump, with Chicago's Carlos Rodon against the Brewers' Corbin Burnes. MLB betting lines seem to favor Burnes, as the home Brewers sit as favorites in this battle between Central division leaders.

Who do we think will win when these teams send their aces to the mound tonight? You’ll want to keep reading our White Sox vs. Brewers picks and predictions, for Saturday, July 24, to find out.

White Sox vs Brewers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Carlos Rodon (8-3, 2.14 ERA): Rodon absolutely dominated the Houston Astros in his last start, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit in seven innings of work on July 18. The lefty has now allowed just one earned run in his last 13 innings on the mound, and he now heads on the road, where he is 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA this season. He’s also 5-2 with a 1.66 ERA in night games.

Corbin Burnes (5-4, 2.16 ERA): In his last trip to the mound, Burnes struck out 12 batters in 8 1-3 shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Burnes arguably has the best swing-and-miss stuff in the game right now, but he is slightly less effective when pitching at home this year. The righty is just 2-4 with a 2.63 ERA when pitching in Milwaukee, as opposed to 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA on the road.

Moneyline pick

Rodon has been remarkable for the White Sox this season, but he does occasionally run into trouble with his control. The lefty hasn’t walked a batter in each of his last two starts but he had walked two or more batters in five straight before that.

Why is that significant? The Brewers have the second-highest walk percentage in baseball against left-handed starters, suggesting they could find a way to throw Rodon off his game  — and throw a lot of extra pitches — tonight.

Milwaukee also has a few guys that have given Rodon trouble in their careers. While the lineups have not been set yet, Willy Adames is 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI against Rodon, while Avisail Garcia is 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs against him. Also, Jackie Bradley Jr., who isn’t a big part of this lineup, is 5 for 10 with a triple, two homers, and two RBIs against Rodon. If he’s called upon, he could make an impact here.

Burnes should also be able to turn in a good outing against this White Sox team. Only two teams in baseball have hit fewer home runs against right-handed pitching on the road than Chicago this year, and that’s not a good thing when facing a pitcher as talented as Burnes. He rarely gives up the long ball to begin with, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he strikes out 10 or more tonight.

PREDICTION: Brewers (-126)

Over/Under pick

The most earned runs Rodon has allowed in a start this season was five, which means that it's highly unlikely he will fully implode when he’s on the mound. He’s allowed one or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 16 starts this season, which gives you a good idea of just how good he’s been.

Basically, we're expecting Rodon to give up maybe three runs at the worst, even in what might be something of a bad matchup.

Burnes, on the other hand, is good enough to contain this White Sox team to less than that, though. He’s as dominant as they come on the hill and Milwaukee will be counting on him to outduel Rodon.

PREDICTION: Under 7.0 (-115)
