Starting pitchers
Eduardo Rodriguez (5-4, 5.64 ERA): Rodriguez has been getting absolutely crushed lately, as the lefty has allowed at least four earned runs in five of his last six starts. Rodriguez has also given up at least seven hits in five of his last six, and he has issued five walks over his last two outings. Rodriguez has some impressive arm talent, but the Sox need better production from him.
Jameson Taillon (1-4, 5.10 ERA): Taillon has struggled to find consistency in his first season with the Yankees, but he has been surprisingly good at Yankee Stadium, which is a tough place to pitch. On the year, Taillon is 1-1 with a 2.90 ERA at home and a miserable 0-3 with a 9.18 ERA on the road. While things haven’t been great for the 29-year-old this season, he can endear himself to Yankees fans by earning a victory over the Red Sox tonight, and he’ll likely be excited about this one being in the Bronx.

Moneyline pick
The Red Sox are sending Rodriguez to the mound in this game, and that has been a losing proposition for them in each of the last four starts he’s made. The lefty has had success in the big leagues before, but he might just be somewhat rusty after having missed the 2020 season with a COVID-related condition. Now, Rodriguez needs to find a way to get his groove back against the rival Yankees. And while it’s hard to back him in this game, the line sure does suggest that Boston is the sharper side here.
As mentioned earlier, Taillon has been excellent when pitching at Yankee Stadium this season, so New York has the edge on the mound on paper. However, the Yankees are only small favorites at home in this one, making this line just too good to be true. Also, for what it’s worth, Boston does have two options that could give Taillon some trouble in this one. Danny Santana and Hunter Renfroe are a combined 5 for 9 with two doubles, two homers and two RBI against the righty in their careers, and then there’s also Alex Verdugo, who is extremely good against right-handed pitchers. The Sox also have Xander Bogaerts, who is good against everyone.
Not only does this Boston lineup pose a threat to Taillon, but Rodriguez has also been solid at Yankee Stadium in his career. In nine starts in the Bronx, he has a 3.96 ERA, and that number could be a lot worse with how easy it is to hit there. Perhaps the adrenaline in this game is what he needs to get this year back on track.
PREDICTION: Red Sox ML +110
Over/Under pick
Even if Rodriguez is able to help his team come away with a win at Yankee Stadium, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll do so without allowing the Yankees to score a couple of runs. A quality start would be a huge win for Boston in this game, but even that would mean he potentially gave up three earned — but four is probably more likely.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox should be able to get their bats going against Taillon. That makes this total seem extremely reachable, even with both teams having bullpens that are performing at high levels this season.
