Jeremy Pena has been one of the most consistent bats for a Houston Astros team that enters the day with a 72.2% chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.
My Rangers vs. Astros predictions see him stepping up offensively once again in a game carrying great weight in the standings. Let’s take a closer look at my September 15 MLB picks.
Rangers vs Astros prediction
Rangers vs Astros best bet: Jeremy Pena Over 0.5 runs (-106)
Jeremy Pena is a run-scoring machine. He's made his way around the bases in 58.3% of his appearances this season and four of his last five overall.
He has a great chance of scoring again vs. the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Pena has tormented right-handed pitching all year, hitting .302 with a solid .167 ISO.
While Jack Leiter has largely pitched well for the Rangers, he’s had a tough time slowing down right-handed hitters. He’s allowed a .267 average to righties, a stark contrast from the .176 average he’s held left-handed bats to.
Pena hasn’t seen Leiter, but there’s evidence to indicate he should find success. Leiter is fastball-first against right-handed hitters, and Pena has hit .309 with just a 9.8% whiff rate against the fastball this season.
It’s also worth noting Pena has performed much better offensively at home this season, and the Houston Astros have home-field advantage in this series.
Rangers vs Astros same-game parlay (SGP)
Jose Altuve is another righty who should benefit from Leiter’s fastball-first approach. He’s hit .275 with a .211 ISO against the pitch this season. Altuve has three hits over his last two games and has driven in four runs spanning the past four games in Houston.
Josh Smith is a good way to get involved with the Rangers offense. He has hit .270 vs. right-handed pitching this season, while Jason Alexander has given up a lot to lefties. Smith has five singles over his last five and has hit more on the road all season.
