Starting pitchers

Aaron Nola (6-5, 4.53 ERA): Nola’s ERA is over the 4.00-mark for the first time since 2016, and his last two starts haven’t been great. Philadelphia did win 15-10 in his last trip to the mound, but Nola gave up four earned runs in six innings of that start against the Chicago Cubs. He had also given up seven earned runs in 4.2 innings in a start against the Miami Marlins before that. The righty’s road ERA is a disastrous 5.40 in 10 starts this year.

Domingo German (4-5, 4.72 ERA): German hasn’t been working as a starter recently, but he’ll get the nod for the Yankees tonight. The 28-year-old is still searching for his first win of the year at Yankee Stadium, where he is 0-2 with a 4.89 ERA in eight starts (and nine total appearances) this year. German has allowed 13 home runs in the Bronx this year, and he’ll need to find a way to keep it inside park against a Phillies lineup that has a decent amount of pop.

Moneyline pick

The Yankees have won two games in a row and seven of their last 10, winning at a clip that was expected of them before the season. Perhaps New York will catch fire and become this team moving forward, and the group does have a nice opportunity to pick up another win tonight.

One player to keep an eye on in this game is Giancarlo Stanton, who is 4 for 13 with a double, two homers and three RBIs against Nola in his career. Stanton has had an up-and-down year with the Bronx Bombers this season, but he is comfortable against Nola dating back to his time with the Miami Marlins. The Yankees will be looking for a spark in this game, and the slugger seems like a likely candidate to deliver one. Also, many of the other New York bats should be able to get the job done against a pitcher that is struggling right now.

German was also lit up in his only start against the Phillies this year, as he allowed seven earned runs in 4.1 innings on the mound. The righty gave up 10 hits in that outing, making it somewhat questionable that this line is as tight as it is. The Phillies have the better starter on the mound, and they aren’t favored all that heavily. That makes it likely that the oddsmakers are fine with bettors backing the Phillies.

PREDICTION: Yankees ML (+106)

Over/Under pick

The Yankees might be somewhat shorthanded at the moment, but they still scored nine runs in their last game of their series against the Boston Red Sox. That means they’re capable of putting a big number on the board, and they’re not facing the same Nola that had a 2.37 ERA in 2018. This version of the righty is beatable, so they should be able to get it going at home here.

The Phillies also have a good opportunity of plating a few, even if it ends up being a losing effort. German likely isn’t going to be able to go out there and throw a ton of innings, and he hasn’t been blanking opponents, in general. Overall, this game should be pretty high-scoring.

PREDICTION: Over 9.0 (-110)
