This Philadelphia Phillies offense broke out on Friday for a 13-0 victory after a long rain delay. However, their bats were quieted on Saturday night by Spencer Schwellenbach, who had a career-high 12 strikeouts in a 6-1 home win for the Atlanta Braves.
Philadelphia struck out a total of 14 times on Saturday and nine on Friday during its shutout win for a total of 23 Ks during the two-game set. Those numbers could very well continue on Sunday afternoon with Spencer Strider on the mound.
Strider is off to a so-so start this season at 3-5 with a 4.07 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, but he still has 53 strikeouts in 42 innings. He's also returned to his normal self as of late with 29 strikeouts — 13, eight, and eight — and four earned runs in 17 innings over his last three starts.
The Braves righthander started in Philadelphia last month and had seven strikeouts despite lasting just 4 2/3 innings. He's lasted at least five innings in all five starts since then, though.
Strider had eight strikeouts in a start against the Phillies last year before his injury. In 2023, he had 8+ strikeouts in 24 of 32 starts, including 9+ in 22 and 10+ in 11 outings.
Given how the Phillies are striking out recently and Strider rounding into form, this could be a ladder spot for the righthander.
