A low-scoring pitcher's duel is in the cards today as Walker Buehler and Nick Martinez take the mound.

The Tampa Bay Rays are priced as a 55% favorite for today's contest against the San Diego Padres, with first pitch scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field.

Both Nick Martinez and Walker Buehler are dealing, but my Padres vs. Rays predictions are backing the visitors, as Martinez has shown more vulnerability at home.

Who will win Padres vs Rays today: Padres moneyline (47%)

For help understanding probabilities, see our odds calculator.

This isn't an easy pick here because Walker Buehler and Nick Martinez are both lights-out right now. They've both held opponents to hard-hit rates of 30% or lower over their last two outings.

Buehler sports a 2.33 xERA during that span with minimal walks and limited home runs. Martinez also has a 3.19 FIP over the last two weeks. However, he has been more hittable at Tropicana Field, posting a 4.27 FIP while allowing 1.33 HR/9

Neither offense is thriving, with the San Diego Padres carrying an 83 wRC+ over the last week, while the Tampa Bay Rays sit at 88.

I expect a pitcher's duel here, but San Diego has a small edge due to Martinez showing inconsistencies at times on his home mound.

Play to 50%.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Buehler is consistently limiting meaningful contact. He's held opponents to a 29.1% hard-hit rate in August, which is significantly better than his season average of 38.6%.

Padres vs Rays Over/Under pick: Under 7.5 (52%)

Even with a low total of 7.5, I’m seeing value in the Under. We’re looking at two starters who are giving up minimal runs, and a pair of lineups that are not exactly in their best form, either.

The bullpen profiles also support the Under. San Diego’s relief corps has a 3.04 FIP over its last 25 2/3 frames, while Tampa Bay’s pen owns a 3.14 xERA over its previous 22 innings.

Both offenses are also struggling to consistently hit for power, which makes it harder to see either side breaking this game open.

This profiles as a low-scoring contest. Play to 56%.

Padres vs Rays home run prediction: Jackson Merrill (15%)

Jackson Merrill has an astounding .522 ISO over his last six games, going deep three times. During that span, he's put 57.9% of his contact in the air.

Martinez has a 47.9% FB rate at home this season, and one mistake in the heart of the plate could be punished by the red-hot Merrill.

While the Rays bullpen has limited hard contact recently, they're still allowing 40.3% fly balls in the last week, potentially giving Merrill another path to a bomb when Martinez is done for the day.

Play this pick up to 20%.

Padres vs Rays weather

Weather won’t be a major factor at Tropicana Field because it’s a dome, so the game environment should be controlled regardless of the outdoor forecast.
