The ACC season kicks off for NC State and Virginia on Saturday when the teams face off in their 2026 season opener.

The Cavaliers gained a surprise home game when the contest was moved from Rio De Janeiro, and they're favored (-3.5) to win despite their probability dropping as the week has progressed.

My NC State vs. Virginia prediction and college football picks are backing the Wolfpack to cover the spread on Saturday, Aug. 29, despite that movement.

 TOP PICK
NC State vs Virginia prediction: NC State +3.5 (51%)

I don’t know what the Virginia Cavaliers are getting with Beau Pribula.

He dealt with injury last season and was below-average against SEC opponents, who picked him off eight times while allowing just four touchdown passes.

But I know what I’m getting with CJ Bailey.

The NC State Wolfpack ranked in the 87th percentile in explosive play rate last year behind his mobility and big arm, and they hit Virginia with seven plays of 20+ yards.

Behind an improved offensive line, I’ll ride with the better quarterback who already knows his playbook

Dave Doeren is 4-0 SU vs. the Cavs. I’m not certain he'll remain perfect, but I am expecting the Wolfpack to cover the spread—despite having moved from +5.5 in my early leans

Back the Wolfpack to 55%.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Wolfpack ranked 21st in net adj EPA/play last season, and seventh in points per “Eckel” drive with an average of 5.24 points.

NC State vs Virginia same-game parlay (SGP)

I do expect Bailey and Pribula to both need a bit of time to settle in with their new teammates. That’s a reason why folks have moved the total down by two points since my early predictions.

Despite that movement, the total is still a bit too high. Virginia is returning quite a bit of production from last year’s outstanding defensive unit that finished 14th in available yards allowed and 14th in late-down success.

Additionally, I expect the Hoos to try to run the ball early and often to wear down NC State’s defense and limit Bailey’s time on the field.
