It's a big-time series when the New York Yankees welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to town.
A World Series preview? The two teams will enter this evening as co-favorites to the fall classic. While New York has won a league-best eight straight games, and L.A. has lost two of its last three, my Yankees vs. Dodgers predictions are counting on that trend to halt.

My analysis
There’s been some heavy movement towards L.A. in this series, and disagreeing with that isn't easy. If you're going to get the Yankees, this is a prime position to do just that. I'm rolling with the Dodgers as my best bet.
Third-year major-leaguer Cody Poteet will grab the mound for the Yankees as he continues to build back from a year off. There is a limited amount of data here to work off. Poteet's first two starts of the year came against two subpar offenses in the Cleveland Guardians and San Francisco Giants, where he allowed a combined three earned runs. Not much has come from those games in the way of negatives, but what's been a constant for Poteet is a hard-hit rate that sits well below the league average. You'd think that would be an issue against the Dodgers.
Though it's underperformed, this L.A. offense has tons of power. Behind Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman, you don't need me to tell you that. All three players rank in the Top 10% of barrel rate, and I expect them to show up today.
On the other side of the mound, Yoshinobu Yamamoto is going for the Dodgers.
Juan Soto, who left last night's game with an injury, puts a giant hole in the Yankees lineup. It should set Yamamoto up well to have some success today. He’s had some mixed starts over his last five, but one of the things he's done throughout is induce the ground ball. Without Soto, making the Yankees a groundball team becomes much more feasible. That and a solid matchup on the other side should be enough to get the job done.

I'm pairing the Over with our best bet, as I projected a total of 9.7. Even though I expect Yamamoto to have some solid success against Soto-less lineup, there are still issues like a barrel rate that sits near the bottom of baseball that could cause trouble. You already know how I feel about the Dodgers matchup, and it appears the offense has awoken with its last two games both going Over.
