The Sun are floundering, and they won't step up to meet Carla Leite and the red-hot Fire in Portland tonight.

The expansion Portland Fire have turned heads with a 4-3 record, and they’ll return home to Moda Center after a three-game road trip to host the struggling Connecticut Sun.

The Fire are hot, and the Suns … are not. That’s why my Sun vs. Fire predictions call for a comfortable victory from the home team with plenty of points from Carla Leite.

Read on in my WNBA picks to see why I’m backing Portland to cover the 6.5-point spread against a struggling Sun team on Wednesday, May 27.

Sun vs Fire prediction

Sun vs Fire best bet: Fire -6.5 (-110)

The Portland Fire have won three of their last four games by turning defense into offense. In that span, they’ve caused 17.5 turnovers and turned them into 27.4 points per game — both top marks in the W.

The Connecticut Sun average the fifth-most turnovers (15.8), and third-most opponent points off turnovers (19.3).

An already-struggling Sun team has lost two straight games by 18+ and will play its fifth straight road game. Fatigue may cause even more careless possessions for the visitors, and I’ll bet this one up to -9.5.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Over the last four games, Connecticut’s 20.8% turnover rate is the second-worst mark in the WNBA.

Sun vs Fire same-game parlay

In four starts, Carla Leite has led the Fire in points (18) and field goals (12.5) per game. The Fire sport a whopping 108.9 offensive rating with her available compared to a paltry 102.4 mark without her. Facing the WNBA’s second-worst defense, I’ll bet Leite up to 17.5.

Turnovers and fastbreak opportunities could lead to a big scoring night from the Fire, which could push the game total Over. Betting the team total is a safer wager, as the Sun average the fewest points per game at just 76.4.

Sun vs Fire SGP

  • Fire -6.5
  • Carla Leite Over 15.5 points
  • Sun team total Under 80.5

Sun vs Fire first basket scorer: Nyadiew Puoch (+1100)

Nyadiew Puoch has started all seven games for Portland, but she’s averaging just 5.4 points across 22.1 minutes. Over her last four games, Puoch’s three points per game in the first quarter have accounted for 60% of her total scoring output.

Puoch has made her team’s first basket in two of four, and she’s been the first basket scorer in the game once. She’s got the fourth-longest odds of any Portland player for this prop, but her early scoring and locked-in starting role make this a calculated risk I’m willing to take for a big, plus-money payout.
