Two NL West rivals clash tonight as the San Diego Padres welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to Petco Park.

Friars’ third baseman Manny Machado has been swinging a hot bat lately, and my Dodgers vs. Padres predictions are zeroing in on his total bases prop.

My Dodgers vs Padres best bet: Manny Machado Over 1.5 total bases (+105 at Caesars)

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in a world of hurt regarding their starting pitching.

Dave Roberts’ latest ploy to navigate the myriad of injuries in his rotation is to recall Matt Sauer to start Tuesday’s contest against the San Diego Padres.

Sauer has made seven appearances and one start this season. He owns a career 5.11 ERA and 5.25 FIP, so he’s not exactly a slam-dunk option.

San Diego has underperformed relative to its talent level, posting a 77 wRC+ (26th) and .277 wOBA (28th) against right-handed pitchers across the last 15 days.

One hitter who hasn’t laxed is Manny Machado. The third baseman has a career-high 155 wRC+ and a robust .320/.382/.516 slash line.

He’s hitting .322 against RHP, so the platoon split isn’t a worry. Sauer hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in any of his starts at AAA, so we likely see a fair amount of L.A.’s bullpen (4.04 ERA since May 1).

When Sauer is in the game, he prefers to attack right-handers with cutters (33.3%) and sinkers (32.7%). I love playing Machado props against alternative fastball-heavy pitchers as he destroyed sinkers (147 wRC+) and cutters (133 wRC+) alike.

Machado has been red hot at the plate, going 13-for-29 with three home runs in his last seven games.

The books have set his total bases prop at 1.5 with slight plus money (+105) to the Over. He’s recorded 2+ total bases in five consecutive games and is averaging 2.7 total bases in his last 10.

Dodgers vs Padres same-game parlay (SGP)

Shohei Ohtani 2+ total bases

Jackson Merrill 2+ total bases

Manny Machado 2+ total bases

Consider this one a “total bases special”. It’s hard to have too much confidence in either side, given L.A.’s poor recent form (17-16 since May 4) and San Diego’s underperformance as a team at the plate.

Instead of forcing a side or total, let’s stick with the player prop market. Shohei Ohtani has homered twice off Dylan Cease in his career and has a 192 wRC+ against RHP this year, so his total bases prop is appealing.

Jackson Merrill is a known righty masher (career 144 wRC+), and Sauer has allowed lefties to hit .306/.375/.500 in his career.
