The Milwaukee Brewers have dropped three out of their last four and are turning to one of baseball's top pitching prospects tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Our Cardinals vs Brewers predictions and MLB picks take a look at young Jacob Misiorowski and explain why he may be in for a bit of a rough time in his MLB debut on Thursday, June 12.
Cardinals vs Brewers prediction
My Cardinals vs Brewers best bet: Cardinals moneyline (-140 at bet365)
The first thing you need to know about Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski is his four-seam and cut fastballs grade out quite well on stuff models, and that’s a large reason why he’s posted a 31.5% strikeout rate in Triple-A, which rivals the best in the level. The 6-foot-7 righty has held an excellent 3.5% barrel rate and a somewhat friendly 39.7% hard-hit rate, which is firmly better than the league average.
Misiorowski's one drawback, other than the fear of fly balls, is his 12.2% walk rate. While he’s carried a strikeout rate well north of 30% at each stop, his walk rate has never dipped below 12%, and when you consider hitters are more disciplined at this level, it becomes problematic.
Young pitchers often struggle to replicate their strikeout numbers for at least the first few months of their big-league careers, and even the stingiest arms have had issues limiting walks against the world’s best hitters.
The St. Louis Cardinals have been a well-disciplined team in the last two weeks, striking out at a low 20.4% clip and walking 7.5% of the time.
The Cardinals rank first in OPS to fly-ball pitchers this season compared to 27th in the reverse split which is a stunning discrepancy, and they’re slugging 170 points better against the former. With their ability to get the ball in play and handle fly-ballers, this youngster is in for a bit of trouble in his debut.
With the Brewers lacking power of their own and hitting just .246 in the last two weeks, I remain confident that Sonny Gray will keep up his solid level — even in a difficult park to hold the ball in the yard — and have enough faith in this matchup for the Cardinals offense.
Cardinals vs Brewers same-game parlay (SGP)
The public is all over Misiorowski given the hype surrounding him, and while much of that hype is real, he’s going to be in for an adjustment period.
The Cardinals are just outside the Top 5 in terms of limiting strikeouts at the dish and have the seventh-lowest strikeout rate in the last two weeks.
It could be a quick showing for Misiorowski, who should be made to throw plenty of pitches, and while the Cardinals don’t take an inordinate number of walks, they are disciplined enough to clear this number.
Misiorowski has made 13 appearances in Triple-A, and only five times did he stay under two walks.
