First thing that stood out today was the starting pitching matchup.

Chase Burns has been outstanding all season at 12-1 with a 2.40 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 128 strikeouts. He has been consistent, efficient and dominant, and his strikeout ability matches up perfectly against a Pittsburgh lineup that has struggled badly with punchouts.

On the other side, Mitch Keller enters with a 4.83 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. He has struggled to find consistency, and those numbers are right in line with his 4.55 career ERA. This is a pitcher Cincinnati should be able to pressure early.

One thing that really stood out was Pittsburgh’s lineup. They already strike out more than any team in baseball, and today they’re missing several important bats. Against a pitcher like Chase Burns, that’s a matchup Cincinnati has to take advantage of.

The Reds had their main lineup intact, the pitching matchup checked every box, and the price was still fair. That’s why I decided to double dip today. I wanted Burns for the first five, but I also trust Cincinnati to finish the job over nine innings. Sometimes when everything lines up, you don’t overthink it.

My only pause on this matchup is that Country Bob is heading in the other direction. But I’m going to trust the work I put into this game and stay with Cincinnati.

Burns is definitely popular today, and I had a few games on the short card that I liked. But once the lineups came out, the combination of Burns and a weakened Pittsburgh lineup felt like the clearest path. I also wanted some fire today, so I was able to double dip on the game. I don’t know what happens from here, but that’s where my head was at.
