Expert WNBA moneyline picks: Sept. 18
Liberty vs Lynx pick: Minnesota Lynx
The New York Liberty played well heading to the FIBA World Cup and are now looking to improve their playoff seeding, mostly in the hopes of avoiding the Minnesota Lynx in the first round. But the Lynx stand in their way of that goal tonight, and Minnesota comes in with a fully healthy lineup.
With Napheesa Collier, Olivia Miles, and Kayla McBride on the floor together, the Lynx are fearsome on both ends of the court. They rank second in both offensive (113.0) and defensive (103.5) rating, hold opponents to 43.3% shooting from the field, and hit 39.1% of their own shots from three-point range.
Minnesota is 17-3 at home this year, and I like the Lynx to win at up to 75% tonight.
Fever vs Tempo pick: Indiana Fever
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever had won seven of nine heading into the World Cup break, and get back on the court tonight against a Toronto Tempo team that has lost 16 of his last 17 games.
Toronto is the worst defensive team in the WNBA, allowing a league-high 93.8 ppg and 112.8 points per 100 possessions. That has proven to be an insurmountable problem in two previous meetings with the Fever, who not only have by far the highest offensive rating in the league (115.9), but also rank second in pace metrics. That leads to a lot of points -- too many for the Tempo to match.
I'm backing the Fever to win at up to 92% tonight.
Fire vs Valkyries pick: Golden State Valkyries
The Portland Fire continue to play tough against good opponents -- they covered in a close loss to the Phoenix Mercury last night -- but that isn't translating to many wins. That includes against the Golden State Valkyries, who have easily defeated the Fire by double-digits in their first two meetings this season.
Golden State is the best defensive scoring team in the league, holding opponents to 75.4 ppg, while also taking a ton of threes and hitting them at a 34.7% clip. This three-and-D approach has been hard to match, and the Fire defense -- which allows 91.1 ppg -- isn't going to slow the Valkyries down tonight.
Portland would be a massive underdog in this game in any situation. But coming off a back-to-back, I'm even more confident in the Valkyries, who I'm backing to win at up to 90%.
Today's WNBA moneyline combo
The Fever and Valkyries aren't offering a big price tonight, but they're both highly likely to win, which makes them great combo fodder. I'm pairing them with the Lynx, who should handle the Liberty, but they're also good add-ons to combos involving any other sporting events tonight.
