Liverpool vs Manchester City picks and predictions
In the past few seasons, we’ve gotten used to seeing Liverpool and Man City battling for the Premier League trophy. The teams meet again on Sunday, but this Liverpool vs. Man City game isn’t quite the same as those in years past.
Heading into the weekend, Liverpool sat in the 10th spot, on just 10 points, 13 behind second-place Man City. This is far from a vintage Liverpool team, and they’ve only won two games in the Premier League this season. In their eight games, they’ve allowed 12 goals and scored 20, but it’s worth remembering that nine of them scored were in one game.
Liverpool are in the midst of an injury crisis with Luis Diaz missing and both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip absent from the back four. This isn’t just about injuries, though, and there have been questions asked as to whether this is the beginning of the end of Jurgen Klopp’s time at Liverpool.
It’s starting to look apparent that he needs to freshen up his team, particularly in central midfield where they look aged and leggy. Liverpool come into this game hot, following a big 7-1 win over Rangers in the Champions League. Still, despite that win and Mo Salah’s impressive six-minute hat-trick, they’re nowhere near the quality of Man City, who won’t allow them the freedom they got on Wednesday.
This Man City team have scored 13 more goals than Liverpool and conceded three fewer. They’re still trailing Arsenal by one point, but it’s very clear that they’re the best team in the Premier League right now. Pep Guardiola’s Man City teams have always scored a lot of goals, but with the addition of Erling Haaland, they’ve taken a leap to the next level and are now absolutely lethal.
City are, for now at least, worlds apart from Liverpool and should leave this game with three points. They’ve started games very quick in the Premier League this season, scoring in the first half in seven of their nine games. Liverpool have also started slowly, giving up first-half goals in six of their eight Premier League matches this season.
With Man City winning their past three games at halftime and at fulltime, we’ll be backing that again here at odds of +200.
My best bet: Man City – Halftime/Fulltime (+200 at bet365)

Liverpool vs Manchester City side analysis
It’s not often you can get Liverpool at a price like +290, and despite their struggles, Jurgen Klopp’s team haven’t lost in 27 Premier League games at home. We’ll likely see three of Salah, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, and Darwin Nunez start, with Firmino and Salah both in good goal-scoring form.
The issue will continue to be behind the frontline, with Virgil van Dijk the only one of Liverpool’s back four who is always a nailed-on starter. He’s most likely going to be partnered by Ibrahima Konate with Konstantinos Tsimikas and Joe Gomez at fullback.
Liverpool’s back four haven’t played that many games together as a unit, which is bad news when Haaland is there to exploit space and miscommunication.
Behind the Norwegian will be Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, and probably Jack Grealish. Foden has been electric recently and has added goals to his game this season. De Bruyne is always a threat, but the evolution of Grealish’s game in recent weeks has been a big boost for City, and he’s becoming a far smarter player under Guardiola.
City are strong favorites for this game, and it’s easy to understand why. They’re the best team on the planet but in these games, you can never be too confident.
I wouldn’t back City at -110, given that they’ve won just one of their past six games at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Manchester City Over/Under analysis
Odds of -210 tell you everything you need to know about the chances of seeing lots of goals at Anfield this Sunday. That implies a 67.7% chance that we see Over 2.5 goals in Liverpool vs. Man City.
There have been plenty of goals in Liverpool’s Premier League games, with Over 2.5 landing in 75% of games, with mid-August the last time we saw Under 2.5 goals at Anfield in the league.
Man City have been dominant in front of goal, and they’ve only had two games that haven’t seen Over 2.5 goals in the league all season.
