Liverpool vs Manchester City predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Side analysis

This weekend sees the start of all the domestic leagues in England besides the Premier League, highlighted by the Community Shield on Saturday. Each year the final acts as a curtain raiser for the season between the winners of the FA Cup and Premier League.

It’ll be Liverpool vs. Man City, but in an unusual twist, as the game will be played at the King Power Stadium in Leicester due to Wembley hosting the final of the Women’s Euro 2022 on Sunday.

The two sides of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have been far superior to the rest of the English game for some time, and this match will give us an indicator of who’ll be topping the table at the end of the year.

Both teams look largely familiar to the previous season but have each made some moves upfront. Liverpool sold Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich and the Senegal star will be a huge loss. He was replaced with Darwin Nunez from Benfica — an expensive signing but one that could be a masterstroke.

Rival fans were quick to pounce on some mistakes in front of goal in friendlies, but we saw during his Champions League performances last year that he is lethal in front of the net. He isn’t quite the finished article but Klopp will improve him. His raw tools are dangerous enough and with his pace and guile, he’ll cause Man City problems.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus left Manchester for London but in their place came Erling Haaland. If you’ve been anywhere near the sport over the past three seasons you’ll know the name well. The young Norwegian has scored for fun at every stage of his career. Now he’s joining a team who scored more goals than anybody else in the Premier League last season and have a wealth of creative talent. The league is well and truly on notice.

These teams put on thrilling matches last season — both games in the Premier League finished a draw — which made it three draws in their past five meetings. Both sides will take this game at full strength, even though it’s technically a friendly.

It’s worth noting that in both of Liverpool’s domestic finals last year they drew in regular time. That is the way I expect to see this game go, with the teams trading blows but eventually finishing with a score draw. At +245 it offers the best value for a game that really could go either way.

Prediction: Draw (+245 at DraftKings)

Over/Under analysis

When you have Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland on the field — let alone the rest of these great squads  — there is a lot of firepower. So we can expect a ton of goals.

The sportsbooks are doing the same — with Over 2.5 being priced at -125 — but it makes sense. Neither team plays defensive when the teams meet, as they both play their regular style and go on the offensive.

Across all competitions, we’ve seen six of their past seven meetings ending with Over 2.5 goals. Notably, two of those results have been score draws too.

Prediction: Over 2.5 (-125 at bet365)

Best bet

It says a lot about the expectations around Erling Haaland that he’s not played a single competitive game for Man City yet and he’s still as short as +115 to score anytime in this game. There’s a reason for that though.

Last year he may have struggled with injuries, but in 24 Bundesliga games he scored 22 goals. He was elite when he was on the field and put up some incredible numbers. He averaged 3.49 shots per game and incredibly had 1.49 shots on target per game.

Now he slots into a Man City team who have packed with creative players and have been playing without a traditional number nine for years. Despite that, they scored more goals than anybody in the league last year and should give Haaland plenty of chances to bury one here.

His one appearance for Man City so far, a friendly victory over Bayern Munich, perhaps gives us a blueprint on how he’ll score. In that game, City got to the byline and the ball went back across the box and found Haaland who poked it in. He scored plenty of goals like that at Dortmund and City found themselves in positions like that a lot last year — but without the traditional striker to poach the chances.

We talk a lot about Haaland’s physical attributes, his great speed, and his strength, but his best attribute is his reading of the game and getting into positions to put the ball into the net.

The price may be short at +115 — especially against a talented Liverpool defense — but you have to think that City’s talented new striker opens his account here. If you’re looking for a bigger price then it could also be worth combining Haaland and Liverpool’s Salah both to score in a Same Game Parlay which would offer you odds of +500 that both men score.
