The Detroit Red Wings have been in a funk. It has been nine years since Detroit made the postseason.

Their Hall of Fame players who helped catapult them to the 2008 and 2009 Stanley Cup finals have left or retired, and the rebuild has been messy.

But things may be changing. The Red Wings are 9-5. Their underlying metrics are solid, and their special teams are performing exceptionally well.

Many of the high draft picks are maturing and assuming key roles. Coach Todd McLellan seems to be a good fit.

See why I am bullish on Detroit winning at home against New York in my Red Wings vs. Rangers predictions and NHL picks for Friday, November 7.

Rangers vs Red Wings prediction

Rangers vs Red Wings Best bet: Red Wings moneyline (-110)

The Detroit Red Wings’ speed is their biggest asset, and they harness that quickness by carrying or passing the puck cleanly out of their zone.

Detroit is loath to use the flip pass on its breakouts, unlike most of the NHL teams, instead doubling down on its speed.

If Detroit can bypass an aggressive New York Rangers forecheck, it has the talent to expose the adversary on the rush. The numbers bear this out.

The Rangers, under new head coach Mike Sullivan, will make their opponents work hard to kill plays, and New York ranks in the top ten in the NHL in offensive zone time.

Their stacked first line of J.T. Miller, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad is especially apt at creating motion above the circles.

Tracking the Rangers players as they interchange and try to sow confusion will be a challenge for a man-on-man defense like Detroit.

This is where the Red Wings’ home ice advantage comes in. I anticipate Red Wings coach Todd McLellan utilizing top defenseman Moritz Seider against the Rangers’ first line.

With Detroit having the last change, the option to line match is there.

Seider has been tremendous this season, excelling in puck battles and contributing offense. If the Rangers’ top line is stymied, they lack reliable depth in their bottom-nine forward group.

Plus, the Red Wings have two viable scoring lines, including the one spearheaded by Alex DeBrincat. With the last change, McLellan will have opportunities to exploit weaker New York personnel.

Rangers vs Red Wings same-game parlay

Adam Fox looks back to his old self after a down season last year by his standards. He has notched 11 points in 14 games, affecting play with his creativity with the puck and his knack for finding passing and shooting lanes.

New York’s power play has been abysmal, but with the skill the Rangers have on the first unit, their 5.41 shooting percentage will likely find some puck luck, and soon.

Alex DeBrincat has three seasons of scoring 39 goals or more, one of which was last year with Detroit. But through 14 games, DeBrincat sits at four goals. The goals are coming.

DeBrincat has the best individual expected goals by a large margin and leads the team in shots by 15. The Red Wings’ power play is Top 10 in the NHL. Detroit moves DeBrincat around from flank to bumper to the net front.

On Friday, DeBrincat is posting at least one goal.
