The New Jersey Devils recently boasted a nearly spotless record at The Rock, winning nine of their first ten home games. Regression was inevitable, but the crash back to earth has been painful.

Tonight, the Devils conclude a four-game homestand, but the good vibes in Newark have dissipated. New Jersey has lost three straight and failed to record a point in all three games.

See why I believe the Devils will avoid losing their fourth straight in my Devils vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights predictions and NHL picks for Friday, December 5.

Golden Knights vs Devils prediction

Golden Knights vs Devils Best bet: New Jersey Devils moneyline (+110)

The Vegas Golden Knights have size and are heavy, and their game is patient. They don’t force plays; they let opponents make mistakes.

In contrast, the New Jersey Devils want to play fast and aggressively. In this matchup, the Devils’ speed presents an opportunity to exploit the Golden Knights.

In the defensive zone, the Golden Knights look to front pucks and counter. But New Jersey will use motion and interchange to disarm Vegas. If the Devils can get pucks through for second and third opportunities, Vegas’s shaky goaltending will be a weakness.

The Devils have demonstrated a vulnerability for spitting up pucks behind the goal line. After that, they can fail to sort out coverage and defend the cycle. To take advantage of this, the Golden Knights would need to be more aggressive on the forecheck than they usually are.

The Devils will look to mitigate the Golden Knights’ forecheck by forcing them to retreat and stay above the puck. The Devils will have a player fly the zone and a defenseman in transition, empowering a three- or four-man rush.

Vegas’s lack of aggression will be a problem in this game. Look for the Devils to cleanly exit their zone and create fits for the Golden Knights with their speed on the rush and in the cycle.

Golden Knights vs Devils same-game parlay

The Devils look to their defensemen to help the offense manufacture slot shots and attack off the rush, and Simon Nemec plays a critical role in these efforts. Despite lots of skill on the back end, Nemec is the Devils’ top point producer.

Timo Meier leads the Devils in individual expected goals and high-danger chances at 5-on-5 and all strengths. With gifted playmakers like Bratt and Hischier on his line, Meier is the obvious trigger man. Meier will get looks, and I like him to light the lamp.
