Since the 2021-22 NHL season, the Colorado Avalanche have won with clinical consistency, ranking first in wins and points during regular season play.

The Avs’ indomitable nucleus and strong organizational infrastructure have helped them weather injuries and cap casualties, making the Avs’ regular-season success a candidate for a third certainty after death and taxes.

Life is less cheery at the moment, as the Avalanche have lost four of their last five games and play powerhouse Vegas on Friday, but my Avalanche vs. Golden Knights predictions and NHL picks believe it's time to buy the dip on October 31.

Avalanche vs Golden Knights prediction

Avalanche vs Golden Knights Best bet: Avalanche moneyline (-110)

The underlying numbers paint a much rosier picture of the Colorado Avalanche than its record does.

Offensively, the team continues to be a buzzsaw, ranking first in expected goals and high-danger chances per 60 minutes at 5-on-5.

But Colorado’s power play, which normally is an asset, struggled mightily in the first 10 contests. Tuesday finally saw a breakthrough, with Colorado posting four goals on the man advantage.

Akira Schmid will likely get the start with the Vegas Golden Knights' No. 1 netminder, Adin Hill, injured. Schmid has been middling, recording a -0.42 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx).

I don’t know if Cale Makar will get his shots through against Vegas’s shot-blocking bulwark, but I do think the one-timer option could be potent as Colorado can zip the puck around with verve.

Vegas has performed admirably on defense despite Alex Pietrangelo and Noah Hanifin’s injuries. And true to their identity, the Golden Knights will look to hold the blue line and stand up in the neutral zone.

The question is: Can Vegas defend the Colorado forwards who are zooming up the ice without the puck? Colorado has the playmakers to hit them in stride.

At a minimum, Colorado will aim to have its forwards leak out and get behind the Golden Knights’ defense, or use the stretch play to soften the forechecking pressure.

Avalanche vs Golden Knights same-game parlay

I see Colorado effectively bottling up the Golden Knights, helping push the total goals comfortably Under 6.5.

The offensive strategy for the Golden Knights is twofold. They will look to create from behind the net on their forecheck and will force the Avalanche to box them out and sort out coverage in the slot.

On the rush, Vegas will try to force the Avalanche and their man-on-man defense to track their forwards off the puck as they sprint toward the net.

I think Colorado is up to the assignment. Before Tuesday’s ugly effort, the Avalanche defense had been stingy, ranking first in slot passes against, first in cycle chances against, and second in slot shots against.

Even after Tuesday’s messy defensive effort, Colorado sits fourth in high-danger chances against per 60 minutes.

The Brock Nelson contract looks like a whiff, and the 30-goal-guy might be gone—permanently. But the Avalanche will give Nelson a long leash to try to have him succeed.

Nelson is seeing the fourth-most time on ice among Avalanche forwards and has firm control of the second-line center role. Nelson has spent the bulk of the year playing with Valeri Nichushkin, and the two have been extremely effective, registering +11 in high-danger chances and outshooting their adversaries by a dozen shots.
