There may not be a more important game in college football this weekend than the American tilt between the Tulane Green Wave and the Memphis Tigers.

Not LSU vs. Alabama. Not Oregon vs. Iowa. Not even BYU vs. Texas Tech.

This matchup could swing the American race. My Tulane vs. Memphis predictions expect the conference frontrunner and home favorite to hold serve, even compared to bookmakers’ expectations.

Tulane vs Memphis prediction

Tulane vs Memphis best bet: Memphis -3.5 (-112)

Do not overreact to the missteps of 18- to 23-year-olds. We all made many mistakes at those ages.

And Memphis's debacle of a loss to UAB was precisely that kind of misstep.

In eight other games this season, the Tigers have gone 8-0 against the spread, exceeding bookmakers' expectations by 10.7 points per game, only two of those eight ATS wins coming within even a touchdown of the spread.

This spread has dropped all week, opening with the Tigers favored by six on Sunday, falling to -4.5 early in the week, and then to -3.5 midday Wednesday. That is understandable faith in Tulane, namely in head coach Jon Sumrall.

However, the Green Wave have not been consistent enough this season to justify this spread falling, certainly not of late. At this point, there is simply too much value in Memphis to turn away from.

Tulane vs Memphis same-game parlay

The stakes of this game may demand the Under all on their own.

Further logic comes from what should be Memphis's game plan, focusing on its rushing attack against a Tulane defense surprisingly suspect against the rush.

In eight FBS games this season, the Green Wave have lost ground against the rush in five, with two more leaving much to be desired.

Our deep-ball SGP: Jake & Bake

Memphis's passing defense has fallen off in the last few weeks, beginning with that comedy of a loss to UAB.

The Tigers have looked better in all regards against South Florida and Rice since then, but they still haven’t been strong in pass defense.

Expect Tulane quarterback Jake Retlaff to find chunks of success through the air.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
