The Indiana Hoosiers have demolished the opposition en route to a 4-0 start on the season. But they should have their hands full on Saturday when they hit the road for the first time to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Indiana is a 7.5-point road favorite, but they’re taking on a team that’s beaten them in eight of the last nine matchups.
My Indiana vs. Iowa predictions and college football picks are grabbing the points with the Hawkeyes in a potential trap game on September 27.
Indiana vs Iowa prediction
Indiana vs Iowa best bet: Iowa +7.5 (-110)
Annihilation only begins to describe the way the Indiana Hoosiers took apart then-No. 9 Illinois 63-10 last time out. That gives Indiana three straight wins where they’ve scored at least 56 points, while holding the opposition to 10 points or fewer as well.
IU is third in the country at 54.8 points per game and fifth in points allowed at 8.3 – the only team in the NCAA that sits Top 5 in both categories.
But this Iowa Hawkeyes matchup slots perfectly into trap game territory and could prove dangerous if the Hoosiers are looking ahead to next week’s showdown with No. 6 Oregon.
Iowa is unranked, but Indiana’s Big Ten rival is no slouch, as each of their last three wins have come by double-digits. The Hawkeyes battled tooth-and-nail with Iowa State, losing that slugfest 16-13.
Home field might play a factor here as well as Indiana has lost four straight games at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
The Hawkeyes have tallied at least 34 points in each of those wins, cracking the 40-point plateau three times, and the Hoosiers lost by at least 16 points each time.
The Hoosiers are churning out 308.8 rushing yards per game, but Iowa is Top 7 in the nation allowing just 60.8 rushing yards per game.
I think Indiana finds enough offense to get the win behind the arm of Fernando Mendoza, but the Hoosiers are going to have to earn it big-time on the road.
Indiana vs Iowa same-game parlay
Fernando Mendoza threw five TD passes in that rout of Illinois, marking the second straight game he’s thrown for a five-pack. He has 14 majors on the year with no interceptions.
The Cal transfer will be making just his second start in a Big Ten conference game, and facing an Iowa defense that’s surrendered just two passing scores in four games.
Then again, Illinois had only allowed two TD tosses before getting shredded by Mendoza.
We’ll wrap with the other pivot, but focus on Mark Gronowski’s legs rather than his arm. He put it on Rutgers last week, rushing for a season-high 55 yards and three TDs.
He’s scored a rush TD in every game this season, and should find his way to paydirt against Indiana.
